Tastes like Bud?
I wasn't aware that Bud had any "taste" whatsoever!

Pibil
The recipe I have is very similar. As a note, though, you can wrap the pork shoulder up in aluminum foil if you can't find banana leaves.
Just beware that the sauce will stain ... and it is indelible! We ruined a tablecloth when a stain from the pibil sauce wouldn't come out.

Food costs, etc.
Stamp ... When my wife and I go to PV, we generally eat in for breakfast and lunch then go out for dinner. As has been stated in prior posts, eating out can range from a $1.30 USD quesadilla at a street vendor to $50 USD for a meal at a fancy tourist trap. But Sue and I rarely spend more than $15 us...

Bagging Groceries
I know that tipping "bag boys", as we were called 'way back when in the early '60's when I did the job for 3 days a week, 12 hours a day, is somewhat an unusual think for us gringos. But back then we'd get about $0.50 if we bagged and loaded groceries into a car. When I'm in PV I usually shop at the...

What to bring?
I always pack a 2 prong extension cord. There aren't enough outlets in Mexican hotel rooms so you may need to plug in the ext. cord near the bed in order to see the bathroom mirror or somesuch.
If your kids are fussy about a particular brand of snack, you might want to bring some along.

PV vs. Mazatlan
I' ve been to Mazatlan 3 times and PV about 20. The ONLY thing that Mazatlan has over PV is that many restaurants in Mazatlan serve a great steak tampequena and that's something that's almost impossible to find in PV.

Steak
Unfortunately, when Sue and I come to PV we can't afford to eat out at expensive places. I suspect that Bruce's does serve a great steak but $30 USD for one entree is what we usually spend on dinner for 2 people (including a couple of drinks each). Ditto for Los Pibes, etc. For a reasonably-priced s...

AI Costs ...
Looks like $800 for a 7 day vacation works out to be $114 per day for drinks and food for 4 people or $28+ per person. If you stay in a condo and eat cereal and fruit for breakfast I doubt that you'd spend more than $2 per person per day. Lunch can be a sandwich, some chips and some fruit which shou...

Authentic Mexican
Actually, Las Margaritas on Basilio Badillo has some pretty good Mexican grub. One of their specials is Chiles en Nogada (althouogh that's not what it is called on the menu) that are chilis stuffed with a meat, raisin and almond mixture. It is covered with a white sauce and sprinkled with pomegranat...

Resort Ratings
I think Tojol hit the nail on the head. The rating system (which I assume is used by the travel agencies) leaves a lot to be desired. Seems to me that a 5* resort ought to be a 5* resort regardless of where you go. However, sometimes (many times?) the number of stars seems out-of-whack with the reso...

Finding a Beach Bar
There are a lot of good Beach Bars on the south side ... Burros, CyC's as well as the others mentioned. Personally I like CyC's because they have very friendly waiters and pretty good food. What I'd do is take a day and frequent most of them ... have a drink in each. Then go back to your fave for th...

Los Tules Studios
We have stayed in a 1 bedroom and it was quite nice. Full (but small) kitchen. I expect the studio would have a queen bed and be smaller than the 1 BR but definitely OK ... especially since you spend most of your time outside anyway.

Health Insurance
Hopefully someone out there in PVLand can help! I was just turned down by Allianz for health insurance in Mexico. My thought was to purchase insurance now (with a very high deductible) to get around the 4+ year waiting period for pre-existing conditions. I had a triple bypass in May of 2001. Does an...

My 2 pesos worth
I've always felt that it is best to use native currency where ever you are. That having been said, I know that it is not always easy (or cheap) to get local currency before you leave the US or Canada. We usually have about $300 or $400 MXP from our last trip so that's not a problem for us but what I...

Pets
Most (if not all) condominiums have a Homeowner's Association. The HOA also has a set of rules that, if you don't follow, can get you kicked out. In the US (and probably in Canada, too) the HOA's for condominiums restrict the number or pets you can have. Many allow no pets ... some allow only one. N...

The Alta Vista is a nice place but the hike up the hill is a killer . My wife and I stayed there after Kenna as our timeshare wasn't available. I thought I was in pretty good shape but I usually had to rest at least once (maybe twice) on the uphill journey. The Torre de Oro is an OK place. Our room ...

Mixed Drinks
If you stick with "bar" booze ... e.g. whatever rum they have on hand rather than Bacardi, I think that most mixed drinks will be in the $4.00 to $5.00 range. Most places have a 2 x 1 Happy Hour at various times of the day. Burros, I think, has one from like 1 - 3 pm then again from 5 - 7 pm or some...

Drinks on Los Muertos
I can only speak for the price of beer ... but since you are college age guys that's more than likely what you drink anyway. Burros at the north end of Los Muertos/Los Arcos beach is, as I recall, 40 pesos all day for a bucket of 3 beers which is about $1.30 USD per beer. CyC's is 45 pesos for a buc...

Hotel Zone for Me
We own a time share at Los Tules which is the next property south of the Fiesta Americana. It would be a long walk from the FA to the Marina and although I've never stayed at the Mariott, I'd guess that the FA is a more "Mexican Style" hotel ... at least the lobby is. You'll probably save 5 - 10 min...
