My Wife's Birthday is on Thursday - Need Some Advice Please!

Hi Folks,

First off, great forum. I browsed for quite some time prior to our arriving here in PV. What an amazing place. We've never been to Mexico, but are already planning our trip back. Sure makes Calgary, Canada seem dull.

Here's my question...

My wife's birthday is this Thursday, and I'd like to do something special (beyond just being here). Can I please ask for your advice?

Ideas I've had:

Spa
Amazing Beach
Amazing Dinner

That's about it. You see why I'm having the problem. I'd love to do something amazing for her, but am a bit at a loss. ANY of those ideas above will work, but there are about a million spa's here, a million beaches, and a million places to have dinner. Something 'unique' and memorable is the one requirement.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Spa treatment is a good idea, where are you staying for ideas of places close to you....

Fantastic Dinners:

Teatro Limon (beautiful place, it may not have that beautiful beach scene, but i guarantee you the food will be FANTASTIC) Not to mention the Chef is a NUT but very entertaining...

Epoca - sunset dinner right there on the beach

Thanks for the advice re: spa's.

We are staying in a vacation rental on Nicaragua Street (which I think is in downtown?). It's quite nice--a few blocks from the ocean, with amazing ocean views, but a bit less 'touristy' and a bit more quiet (except for the dogs and roosters...

)

Any suggestions for a spa nearby? We can travel as well.

Teatro sounds like an amazing place. Will give it a try.

I'd read somewhere that the 'Rythm of the Night' was a bit 'overdone', is that not the case? Read: lots of tourists and a bit worn out. No?

Appreciate any and all advice on how to make this a wonderful day for her. (Granted we are in PV, which is a wonderful place to begin with--just looking to make it magic).

If you ever find yourself in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and are in need of advice--I'm your guy.

for teatro limon - go to www.teatrolimon.com and get the latest menu items, and maps to the place. also you will find some excellent pictures Chef's specialties...

Oh i am sure that Rythm of the Nights can be a little "touristy" but you make it what you want... the sunset boat ride out with your lady, a nice dinner on the beach (granted it is buffet, but heck with the waves crashing ashore, the moon high in the sky, etc) and then the show after dinner, and then that romantic moonlit ride back...

I wouldn't say Rhythms is a bit worn out, but it is definitely designed for mass tourism. The setting is romantic (remote beach, torchlit dinner and show), but the volume of other people enjoying that romance with you in close proximity IMHO would make it less so.

For "spa" treatments - check out the thread here about Metamorfosis. I go there regularly every year for massages, and they have now added manicure/pedicure to their repetoire...so you could send or take your wife for a relaxing half day of pampering, at a very good price.

Afterwards I would take her for a lovely sunset dinner somewhere. Plenty of great venues to enjoy that. My personal favourite for the romance/ambience/food scale is Vista Grill. It's a little pricier than many places but considering what you and I are paying for a good meal in Calgary these days, this place is a steal for what you get and has double the ambience and romance factor of pretty much any upscale offering in Cowtown right now. check them out at vistagrill.com for more details, photos, and an idea of menu offerings. I recommend a reservation, and that you indicate it is a special occasion dinner and you would like a railing seating (for the best view of city and bay).

Follow up dinner with an evening stroll along the Malecon (oceanfront boardwalk) to enjoy the sights/sounds/smells. Maybe stop at La Bodeguita del Medio for a nightcap mojito and some live salsa music.

Sounds like a great day to me.

Is the Rhythms of the Night dinner buffet now? That's a step back, when I took the trip with my wife, it was waited dinner (if that's how you say it...) not a buffet, which is, admittedly, much less romantic...

buffet the 2x we've been, food was very good considering and the show was spectacular.
La Palapa is right on Los Muertos beach as well and seems to specialise in romantic dinners, Metamorphosis is just a block or so inland.

I have to agree you can't get much more romantic than dinner on the beach starting with drinks at sunset. You are in a tropical beach location so why not take advantage of the atmosphere?

So we hit a bit of a roadblock...

About 2:30 last night my wife woke up with terrible nausea/chills/etc.

Seems either the Marlin Taco's or the ChiChi (she just had one!) didn't sit right at all.

We had a sleepless night.

Needless to say today has been very subdued. She is feeling much better now--weak and tired, but the worst has passed.

I really appreciate all of the tips/guidance/advice. Sometimes it's the unexpected things that'll get you. What can you do, right?

There is always next year...
