LOCAL CUSTOMS & LAWS Reply with quote
LOCAL CUSTOMS & LAWS

Tourist Card – when you arrive in Mexico you will require an Immigration document called a “Tourist card”. You don’t need to carry this document with you, but you will need to present when departing the country.

Legal drinking age – is 18 years. It is illegal to drink in public. Drug laws are harsh.

Siesta time – 2-4pm, many businesses close during this time.

Tipping – is similar to Canada & the U.S. 15% - 20% in restaurants & bars.

Restaurants – you may wonder why it takes so long for someone to bring you the bill. In Mexico it is considered rude to bring the bill until you request it. To local culture it infers that the client is being asked to leave. So when you are ready to leave, you should ask for the bill.

I've noticed that as I get older EVERYBODY is trying to tell me something. (Except my wife.... she's been speechless lately.)

Question about Tourist Card Reply with quote
Is there a place online that I can pick up one of these cards so we can get them filled out early? This is our first trip to Mexico via air (previous times have been on cruise ships). Is there anything else we will need when travelling from the US to Mexico other than our passports and this Tourist Card?

Thanks so much. Yeah, gonna have plenty of money. Still trying to decide if I want to bring cash or traveler's checks. Does anyone have an opinion one way or another? Also, we usually shop with American Express. Do many places take that or will I need to use my Visa card?

I would try to use the credit card for "backup" or an emergency more so than for purchasing, as many places don't take ANY cc's. You'd be far better off taking your ATM card (if it's different from your cc), and taking cash out on an "as needed" basis, rather than going down with a wad of cash, or a wad of traveler's check's even.

You'll find the traveler's check's far more of a pain in the a$$ than your ATM card.

If you search the bulletin board using the search link above, on "credit cards" or ATM's, there will be plenty of past posts about this, as it's been discussed quite a bit over time.
