If you love the big hotels, nightlife, shopping and more, Puerto Vallarta offers everything you might need in those areas, but if what you want to do is relax a little more in contact with nature and the tranquility is offers, an excellent option is to go to visit Sayulita, a village located just 30 minutes from Vallarta.
This small, but wonderful place is in the southern part of the state of Nayarit, within the Bay of Banderas. It has a population of only 2,318 inhabitants, and as we said before, if you want to get away from the hustle and enjoy in a beautiful calm day, Sayulita is definitely the best choice. Many people who knew Puerto Vallarta before it became the world class tourist destination it is today, say Sayulita is very much like the tourist town was in the past.
Sayulita is known for its beautiful estuary, cliffs and, of course, the beautiful sea. Here there is no distinction between tourists and local visitors, all mingle together with the locals, and because there are no nightclubs or grand tourism hotels, the atmosphere is calm and relaxed, completely away from the pressures and bustle of big cities.
If you have the opportunity it is highly recommendable that you visit the surrounding hills. Once there you can enjoy the beautiful and majestic view of the town and all the places that surround it. Only from this vantage point can you truly appreciate its abundance and extension, its enigmatic jungle, unique and warm sunsets, the amplitude and whiteness of the beaches and even the men who’ve worked all day in the field when they come back home satisfied.
The vegetation that exists in Sayulita is very similar to what we find in a tropical forest, so it is very common to find tall trees such as the Serrano Oak, Huanacaxtle or Parota, the Guayacan, Ceiba, red cedar, Coacomate and Mahogany. The latter, as we know, has highly prized wood and has been overexploited, so in the present time it is a very rare tree.
The characteristic fauna of this region is truly fascinating too, if you want to venture out for a walk through the thick jungle and if you run with some luck you may even be able to meet some pumas, but better keep a distance. It is also possible to find beavers, armadillos, badgers, wild boar, rattlesnakes, iguanas, ocelots, deer, turkeys and more.
Another interesting activity and attraction in Sayulita is the surrounding sea and fishing options specifically, the variety of species you can find here is numerous and varied. The beaches here offer: marlin, swordfish, dorado, snapper, tuna, lobster, marlin, shrimp, scallops and more.
Despite the absence of large nightclubs and a quiet nightlife, Sayulita does offers options for all tastes. During the holiday period you’ll find live bands in outdoor concerts on the beach or by the river. Also for those who want to go to a disco, it is possible to sometimes find events organized at the local baseball field to please those who like dancing. For those who prefer something a little more intense on Sunday there are rodeo shows.
So if you are interested and want to come to know this picturesque place, just take the Tepic-Vallarta Highway 200, on kilometer 125 you’ll find a detour that takes you to Sayulita. View map
