Evenyl Roemmich review of the Gallery:

Galeria Demetro, The Heart and Soul of Sculpture

I have been lucky enough to have visited art galleries in many cities of the world. I appreciate the talent behind galleries in Paris, Moscow, Barcelona, Rome, San Francisco and other cities. My only talent is to visually enjoy what I see. About 15 years ago we visited a gallery in Puerto Vallarta. It took a few years to fall in love with sculptures on the Malecon. Now PV is a virtual hub for art. So, I was excited to be introduced to a new gallery, Demetro Galeria at the end of Gary Thompson’s Thursday evening Sunset Sculpture Tour at our last visit in November 2018. (tours are offered Nov to April) The American sculptor Jim Demetro opened his gallery in Old Town about a year ago. It is spacious, shows about 30 artists’ work of painting and sculpture plus his own creations. He and his wife Eva are hosts at the end of the tour with a talk about how his sculpture is designed, the process from idea to finished piece. Refreshments and conversation for all.

I was really blown away when I checked his web site (www.demetro.net) to see his range of design from Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe, Native Americans, “Spirit of America” a memorial to 9/11, to one of his most recent, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s The Lovers. Three sculptures of his are on this evening tour but there are others in PV. Some of his work reminds me of Rodin’s Hand of God and Degas’ Ballerina. Later in our visit, we attended Xiutla Folkloria Dancers performance only to be surprised they were honoring him that evening with the 2018 Vallarta Culture Institute Award.

Jim appears to be a humble man and generous in his art. He and his daughter Christina, also a sculptor, have worked side-by-side on many creations. His Spirit of America monument can be found in Cashmere, WA as well as many in the Vancouver, WA area and other places in the world. He states that he choose bronze because of its exceptional quality of high detail, flexability and longevity. He sculpts 100 % by hand with realistic detail

It is a must do for any art lover to visit his gallery at Lazaro Cardenas #169. the street to the north of the park, south of the river and just east of the extended Malecon near the beach. His art speaks to my heart and soul as I’m sure it will yours. And did I mention its all free unless you decide to buy. I’m sure they will arrange that also.

GALERÍA DE OLLAS

Exclusively dedicated to showcasing the fine pottery of Mata Ortiz, Mexico. This little town in the middle of the desert in Chihuahua State is the hometown to about 300 ceramists who create a unique art form from clay. Each piece is painstakingly hand-built from coils and painted free-hand with great refinement.

It all started when a 15 year old boy, Juan Quezada who lived in Mata Ortiz, left school to help his family by gathering wood  in the nearby mountains. As he wandered across the plains, he found shards of ancient pottery, so he began his quest to make pottery the way it had been done by the ancient peoples of Paquimé. In 1971 after 15 years of observations, experimentation, trial and error, Juan succeeded. He had recreated the whole pottery making process.

Galería de Ollas was established in February 1998 and since then has been dedicated to displaying and selling the works of the finest Mata Ortiz potters.
