Tehuamixtle, beautiful beach getaway

Approximately an hour from Puerto Vallarta you will find El Tuito and if you continue traveling another 25 miles toward the coast, you’ll arrive at the small fishing village of Tehuamixtle (some places it is written Tehualmixtle), a beach that’s well known for delicious oysters and seafood.

The Tehuamixtle Bay or as locals call it, “Tehua”, is well known for its clear waters, lobsters, shellfish and other sea bounties.

The unspoiled beach is perfect for those who are nervous about a strong tide, having smooth waters and white sand.

It is an ideal location for kayaking, snorkelling, boat rides or just basking in the sun.

Depending on the season you’ll be able to see dolphins, manta rays or sea turtles. There’s also a hidden beach nearby known to locals as the “little beach of love”.

By sea, some 30 minutes northward (as if going back to Puerto Vallarta), you’ll arrive at “Los Morros”, a rocky sea formation, both a famous diving spot and very productive for the local fishermen. There’s a sunken ship in the middle of the bay that could be interesting for those that enjoy skin diving or scuba diving.

Another attraction of Tehuamixtle is the oysters. Since 2005, residents have worked cooperatively to respond to the demand for the local oysters but still protect their local natural resources. There is also a sea turtle preserve in the area.

Tehuamixtle has three restaurants on the seashore: Liz Adriana, Cande’s and La Galleta. Among the menu items, you’ll find are the well-known stone oysters (ostiones de piedra), fresh fish (pescado fresco), aguachile and shrimp ceviche that are all absolutely delicious.

And as the sun sets over the horizon you can admire the beautiful sunset over the waters of the Pacific.

For those who choose to stay, there is also a humble 6-room hotel located on the beach and you can camp along the edge of the ocean and enjoy a campfire under the moon, listening to the calming waves.

Located 54 miles (87 kilometers) south of Puerto Vallarta’s main square, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in the state of Jalisco, Mexico.

To get to Tehuamixtle, you can take a bus from Monday to Saturday at 2:00 pm from the Plaza de El Tuito. The return bus departs at 7:15 am.

The drive is around two hours south of Puerto Vallarta, it’ll depend on the time of year (road conditions) and driving experience.

You drive to El Tuito, there you take Calle Pablo Ríos and turn left when you arrive at Calle Jalisco, drive past the plaza, continue through the village, this is the road that’ll take you to Tehuamixtle. Part of the road is dirt, the last part is paved, sometime soon it’ll be completed and the total drive time will go down at least 30 minutes.
