PV Takes the Crown as Mexico’s Mariachi Capital

A recent study conducted by the Jalisco State Institute of Statistical and Geographical Information (IIEG) in collaboration with the Secretariat of Culture of Jalisco has revealed a surprising finding: Puerto Vallarta has the highest concentration of mariachi bands in all of Mexico.

The research, titled “Mariachis: Cultural Information Directory,” aimed to map and quantify the presence of mariachi music throughout the state of Jalisco, a region renowned for its rich musical heritage. The study found that Jalisco is home to at least 369 mariachi groups, 61 academies, and 156 festivals dedicated to this traditional Mexican music.

Among the municipalities in Jalisco, Puerto Vallarta stood out with an impressive 22 mariachi bands, followed by Cocula with 17 and Lagos Moreno with 15. These findings underscore Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant musical scene and its commitment to preserving Mexico’s cultural heritage.
