Puerto Vallarta’s Civil Protection and Fire Department is gearing up for the anticipated sea turtle nesting season. With the support of the municipal government led by Luis Munguía, the department recently conducted a comprehensive theoretical and practical workshop for its Aquatic Rescue personnel. This specialized training, delivered by Dr. Mitzi Núñez from the Flora and Fauna Wildlife Research and Conservation Group A.C., focused on the proper protocols for handling and rescuing stranded sea turtles, significantly bolstering the team’s ability to protect these vulnerable species.
During the training session, participants gained deeper insights into sea turtle behavior, the various threats they face, and safe handling techniques for critical situations. Misael López Muro, director of the agency, emphasized the timely nature of the training: “We are approaching the nesting season when turtles begin to lay eggs on our beaches. Therefore, we requested this training to be better prepared.” He also extended gratitude to the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources for supporting this crucial initiative.
Additionally, the rescue teams engaged in field exercises to enhance their response capabilities when encountering stranded turtles or other marine species in distress that require specialized attention. This proactive measure highlights the municipal government’s commitment to strengthening the preparedness of its emergency services and safeguarding Puerto Vallarta’s rich biodiversity during a critical period for the marine ecosystem, ultimately contributing to the conservation of local wildlife.
