The iconic Río Cuale Market, one of Puerto Vallarta’s most emblematic spaces, has received prestigious national recognition, officially cementing its status as an architectural gem of Mexico.
In a proud and emotional ceremony, municipal authorities and representatives from the Federation of Colleges of Architects of the Mexican Republic (FCARM) unveiled a plaque formalizing the market’s inclusion in the FCARM Architectural Observatory. This distinction is reserved for 20th-century buildings with significant historical, cultural, and structural value.
The market, designed by the celebrated architect Alejandro Zohn and completed between 1977 and 1979, was praised as a prime example of its era’s public architecture: functional, open, and beautifully integrated into its natural river environment. Mayor Luis Munguía and FCARM National President Miguel Sosa Correa emphasized the building’s importance as a key urban reference point and a vital part of the Vallartense identity.
The local and national recognition not only reaffirms the Río Cuale Market’s historical and cultural significance but also proudly positions it as a living symbol of modern Mexican architecture and a treasured focal point in Puerto Vallarta’s collective memory.
