Twenty years ago, a group of families from the Ejido El Jorullo came together with a vision to turn their local mountains into a sustainable tourism destination. What started as a small zipline project known as Canopy River has now evolved into River Park, a premier ecotourism destination celebrating two decades of success this month. This community-led project has become a global model for how rural families can protect their environment while creating local jobs.
The park is most famous for the Jorullo Bridge, which opened in 2017 and remains the longest hanging vehicle bridge in the world. Stretching 470 meters across the Sierra Madre mountains at a height of 150 meters, the bridge offers thrilling views for those crossing on ATVs or RZRs. In addition to the bridge, visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities including rappelling, rafting, hiking, and mule rides, as well as the “Jorullo Point” glass lookout for panoramic photos of the bay and jungle.
Beyond the adrenaline, River Park is deeply rooted in the local culture and identity of the Jorullo community. By focusing on sustainable practices, the park has helped preserve the native forest while diversifying the local economy.
