The 26th Puerto Vallarta International Film Festival (FICPV) officially launched today, Monday, April 27, 2026, with an opening ceremony led by Mayor Luis Munguía. The festival’s highest honor, the Golden Iguana Award, was presented to acclaimed Brazilian director Allan Deberton in recognition of his significant contributions to global cinema. The event highlighted the city’s commitment to supporting local talent and fostering a strong partnership between the municipal government and the University of Guadalajara to promote regional film production.
The opening night featured the screening of Deberton’s latest work, “FEITO PIPA” (Gugu’s World), a standout selection in the Maguey Prize category, which focuses on LGBTQI+ storytelling and inclusion. This year’s festival emphasizes accessible art, with all screenings offered free of charge to the public through April 30. Venues range from academic settings like the Centro Universitario de la Costa to community hubs like Los Mangos Library and commercial theaters like Cinépolis Pitillal, ensuring the films reach a diverse audience across the city.
Running for four days, the festival serves as a cultural bridge, bringing international perspectives to the shores of the Mexican Pacific. Organized by Cultura UDG, the event includes workshops and activities alongside its competitive screenings. Mayor Munguía encouraged residents and visitors alike to participate in this “grand celebration of art,” solidifying Puerto Vallarta’s reputation as a key destination for independent cinema and cultural exchange in Latin America.
