Puerto Vallarta Prepares for Active 2026 Pacific Cyclone Season

Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) has released its official outlook for the 2026 Pacific cyclone season, predicting above-average activity that could affect Puerto Vallarta and the broader Banderas Bay region.

Running from May 15 through November 30, the season forecast calls for 18 to 21 named tropical cyclones in the Eastern Pacific basin. Of those, 9 to 10 are expected to become tropical storms, 5 to 6 Category 1 or 2 hurricanes, and 4 to 5 major hurricanes reaching Category 3 or higher.

The forecasts also point to developing El Niño conditions, which can influence ocean temperatures, wind patterns, and storm behavior across the eastern Pacific. While seasonal outlooks describe basin-wide activity rather than specific landfalls, Puerto Vallarta officials are taking the elevated risk seriously.

For visitors, Puerto Vallarta’s most common storm dangers stem from water rather than wind alone. The city sits between the Pacific Ocean, Banderas Bay, river channels, and steep Sierra Madre terrain. Heavy rain, swollen rivers like the Cuale, street flooding, landslides, and dangerous surf can occur even from storms that remain offshore.

Travelers considering trips between August and October, the peak months, may want to review travel insurance options and confirm cancellation policies. During a storm, visitors should heed red-flag beach warnings, follow tour and port restrictions, and monitor official channels including the Jalisco Alerta app and local weather updates.

Puerto Vallarta has weathered strong storms before, including Hurricane Patricia in 2015 and Hurricane Nora in 2021. Even nearby storms can disrupt power, close beaches, and affect roads. Most trips through the season are uninterrupted, but advanced planning helps.
