Jalisco has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation by designating two new Protected Natural Areas (PNAs): Sierra El Cuale and El Bajío. These areas will be protected under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat of the Environment and Territorial Development (SEMADET).
Sierra El Cuale, spanning 81,887.75 hectares across four municipalities, plays a vital role in supplying water to Puerto Vallarta and regulating the local climate. The PNA will help protect the region from natural disasters and ensure the environmental well-being of coastal communities.
The El Bajío State Hydrological Reserve, located in Zapopan, covers 971.27 hectares and aims to preserve its ecologically significant areas. By limiting urban development and maintaining 80% of the land in its natural state, the PNA will help regulate water flow and protect biodiversity.
Both PNAs will allow for sustainable activities like ecotourism, agriculture, and livestock farming. Sierra El Cuale, in particular, will promote sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.
