Climate
Puerto Vallarta enjoys a warm, tropical climate all year-round, average daytime temperatures of 80ºF (27ºC), and cooler evenings in the winter. Summer is sunny, warm, and humid, with some afternoon rains, enough to cool things a bit. Read more in our Weather section.

Electricity
Mexico operates on the same 110-volt current as the United States, so electrical current adapters are not needed, not all plugs have 3 prongs, so you may need a plug adapter reducing from 3 to 2 prongs. Read more.

Flights/Gateways
Hundreds of flights per week service Puerto Vallarta’s International Airport (PVR), from gateways throughout the USA, Canada, and Mexico. International carriers include Aeromexico, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, United, and others. More in the Airport information.

Geography / Location
Located in the heart of Mexico’s Pacific coast, Vallarta is within easy reach of the USA and Canada by air. The city is encircled by the lush jungle-clad Sierra Madre mountains to the east and the Bay of Banderas to the west, one of Mexico’s largest natural bays. To the North is the State of Nayarit and Riviera Nayarit, which includes Nuevo Vallarta. Check out our map.

Accommodation
Over 22,000, in a wide variety of price ranges and styles. All-inclusive (AI) hotels and resorts offer both food, drinks, activities, and tips for one price. EP or European Plan rates only include the room. See more at hotels & resorts

Medical
Modern First-World medical facilities of the highest level. There are several private hospitals in Puerto Vallarta, with insured, emergency health care, and emergency air-evacuation services also available.

Population
PV is home to over inhabitants (2020 census) and attracts more than 5 million visitors annually (2019 CVB data).

Safety
This town enjoys a healthy economy and a stable political environment. A special tourist police corps is on hand to provide assistance and directions. Vallarta doesn’t have the violence the media informs about in the border towns and cities between the USA and Mexico, so the city and surroundings are just as safe (or even safer) than most comparable cities and towns in the USA and Canada. More on crime and safety.

Water Quality
Tap water is of a very high standard, even so, purified water is available in all hotels and restaurants.

Customs at the airport

Upon arrival at the International Puerto Vallarta Airport you'll first go through immigration, then you'll pick up your luggage on the carrousels and then you'll go into the customs area where you will be asked to push a button that will randomly determine if your baggage will be checked or not (though at some point it was mentioned that it wouldn't be used any more, it's still in use). If you get a green light you are free to continue to the exit gate through the so-called shark tank (timeshare people, read more), if you get a red light you will need to take your bags to the customs counter and have them checked. This system is totally random and tends to show many more green lights than red lights. More on the duty-free - tax-free allowance section. Please check at the Mexican consulate in your city for necessary documents to come to Mexico, or even easier, visit the US Travel Gov site for more information. Puerto Vallarta Colonias

Puerto Vallarta and any city in Mexico are divided into many "Colonias" or neighborhoods if you will. Here's a map that shows most, if not all, the colonias in the city: Some of the most important colonias are: Residencial Conchas Chinas: Hillside SE from Los Muertos beach. Colonia Alta Vista Colonia Emiliano Zapata: South of the Cuale River (Zona Romántica or "Old Town") Colonia Caloso and Canoas: East of Colonia Emiliano Zapata and up the Cuale River. Colonia Centro: The oldest section of Puerto Vallarta and its current downtown area too - North of the Cuale river up until Parque Hidalgo. Colonia 5 de Diciembre: Just north of downtown Vallarta (Centro), and with Colonia Emiliano Zapata was of the first neighborhoods beyond Colonia Centro to be developed. Colonia Lázaro Cardenas: Includes a large sports complex and the city's largest fish market, from Parque Hidalgo to the Libramiento (City Bypass). Colonia Versalles: The Old Zona Rosa, prior to the development of the Northern Hotel Zone. Colonia Bugambillas and Ramblases: Located on the NW slopes of the hills, East of the city. Colonia Pitillal: Once a small town and now a populous neighborhood, a separate "delegación" but now ...

Duty-free and tax-free shopping allowances

Upon arrival at the International Puerto Vallarta airport, you are asked to push a button that will be determined if you are searched or not if you get a green light you go and if you get a red light you are searched, this system is completely random. (These stoplights will soon be eliminated). Review current and updated rules, click here. (This article is just for reference, please contact the right authorities to get the latest and official information) Foreigners visiting our city may bring gifts of up to $300 US dollars in total value or its equivalent in other foreign currencies without paying taxes, in the form of one or more articles, with the exception of beer, alcoholic drinks, and processed tobacco. Please remember that you must fill out the customs declaration form that will be given to you by the airplane crew members. One form should be filled out per family, not one per person, as the exemption is counted per family.  Over $300 US dollars, for visitors citizens of USA and Canada (due to the Free Trade Agreement) taxation, will be of 16 – 18% on the product price - only on those products that are made ...

Business hours

Most shopping malls are open from 10 AM to 8 PM, and maybe even a little longer. Normal business hours are: Monday to Friday: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM, usually with a two-hour break from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Some public offices work from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM without breaks and close after that. Banks are normally open from Monday to Friday from 9 AM to around 4 or 5 PM, some few offices may open 4 hours on Saturdays. Many government offices close early, INM, for example, closes at 1 PM, others may close at 3 PM, check them out before taking time to visit a closed office. Mexico, as most American countries, has a more relaxed view of working schedules, some businesses, such as Banks and Supermarkets are very strict, but shops and others can have working schedules that vary quite a bit from the norm, opening earlier and closing later. Puerto Vallarta Banks

This is the updated list of banks in Puerto Vallarta, there are smaller banks and local banks, like Banco Azteca and Banco Walmart, which we've left out. If you think we should include a missing location, please use our contact information at the end of each page. PV Bank Directory Bank location map Most banks in the city offer bilingual service, you may have language issues if you choose offices that are outside the normal tourist areas, but nothing a bit of universal sign language can't resolve, remember, you are in Vallarta, one of the friendliest places on planet Earth. PV Bank Map Mexico newbies may wonder why addresses are provided with "between this street and this other street", you'd imagine it would be enough with the number and the street. That is not the case, streets can sometimes skip numbers, sometimes they change erratically, and sometimes you are sure you should find a number at a certain location and SURPRISE! it's not there. So do note down the "between streets" information too, as you never know when it'll come in handy and save you a lot of time and frustration.
