What kind of bugs are in PV that we would need to wear insect repellant?

Paull,

I don't know what you plan on doing when you are there as to trips etc.... But last April there were 8 of us in our group and we walked everynight or stayed on the beach all day into the evening. We went on the Canopy Tour through the jungle. The entire time we were doing all this not one of us swatted a mosquito or anything. I don't think you need to worry at all. Unless maybe you are going in the rainy season (summer) than maybe it's different.

Have fun,
Tony

I concur with the others. One caveat. If you decide to do a jungle tour (ATV, Canopy, whatnot) get some spray and use it. I visited the Los Veranos tour and they downplayed the bug spray. Offerred it but I didn't seem too concerned. I tell you what, those little mosquitos in the hills pack a helluva wallop. I live in mosquitoville (se texas) and built up a tolerance to local skeeters. Those PV jungle skeeters kicked my butt. Itchy OMG and welts. Looked like I had a splinter in every bite. I suffered with the itching for over 7 days after departing. Interesting eh.

If you plan on sticking to the beach, whatnot, you'll be fine without.

If your trip is during rainy season (approx. June-mid Oct.)and you go anywhere where there is lush vegetation, you will find mosquitos and as the previous poster said, they are a cut above the ones we usually see where we live. You will be glad you had some repellant. Also, some of the beaches, i.e. Boca de Tomatlan are known for their "no-see-ums" which will eat up your legs in the sand if not careful. Better be safe than sorry, unless you like scratching.

Thanks everyone for your input about mosquitoe. I will be going at the beginning of March so your bulletins say I should be fine. The no seeums are during the rainy season too... right? I have no plans to go into the jungle - just the beach and shopping. I got the idea about the mosquitos originally from an AMA (Alberta Motor Assoc) handbook about Puerto Vallarta.

We also made the observation that with all of the open air restaurants there was rarely even a fly. We were there for most of a week and I only saw two flies. My daughter got some bites but we didn't actually see the varmints that were responsible.
