hello all - thanx for a great source of info.
my wife and 3 1/2 year old daughter will be visiting pv mid april. we received a gift of 4 nights stay at an ai that i believe is quite nice (casa velas).
i'm lobbying that we extend our stay to a week and would like to stay somewhere that perhaps has a little more local flavor but appropriate for all of us.
any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.
thanx in advance.

Hola Smirky,
Welcome.

You are talking about extending your vacation in mid April. It is going to be rather difficult to have alot of choices that would give you "the local flavor". Easter week and the week after are two of the busiest weeks in PV. Alot of mexican nationals come to PV for the holidays and it gets really crowded. My suggestion would be to check on availability for those dates and if you find something available post it and someone can give you feedback on it. There is a tab at the top of the page or hotels and resorts which would be a good place to starte your search. If you can't find anything there then you might want to check the usual Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. for those dates.

Let us know what you find and we can give you some feedback of the places you have found. Ya gotta work fast though because as I said the whole town fills up those two weeks.

hello again and thanx for the suggestions.
i'm struggling a little bit here as the reviews that i can find suggest the hotels are schizophrenic! how can one reviewer rave and the next rant incessantly about the same hotel in the same time period? i understand the variance of peoples perception, but the abyss between reviews almost sound like something from the twilight zone. how's a guy to know?

basically we are looking to find a clean, modest hotel that allows us to get out and enjoy the local color and flavors. if i were traveling solo it would be a little different, but i think with my wife and daughter i should be a little more prudent.

anyhoo... i've found the following:
suites del sol
playa del costa sur
flamingos vallarta
nh krystal vallarta

any opinions will be greatly appreciated... perhaps i should look elsewhere like condo etc.

have a great day.

Hello Smirky, I have been vacationing in PV since 1988 and I think you will love the place. You want to be careful of one major pitfall in PV: the time share sales. I advise you to RUN AWAY FROM ANY TIMES SHARE SOLICITATION. especially avoid the Playa Del SOl Group. I previously owned with them and can tell you from bitter experience that they lie, cheat and exaggerate and fail to deliver what you purchased. One of the properties you mentioned is their property-Costa Sur-do not go there: it is old, poorly maintained and al ong way from town. They have several other properties, all called Playa del Sol or something similar AVOID. The other property that you mentioned " Flamingos" is very nice but also very expensive and a very long way from town. The Krystal is a good choice. Close enough in so that old town is readily accessible by taxi or bus, numerous pools, restaurants, disco, fiesta and nicely manicured property and well maintained, nice buildings. I am not familiar with the Suites del Sol. Should you look at other properties I suggest you stay in the area between the cruise ship harbor and the town proper: it is close enough in to allow you ready access to town and also contains some very nice properties.

Dude,
You must have never gone to Costa Sur, as far as it being a long way into town, I beg to differ. The bus stops right out front and you are on the south side of town in less than 15 minutes. I will give you that its an older resort but not poorly maintained. I would think it would be the perfect place to stay, go into town to eat and then hang out back at the pool to avoid the easter crowd. I really think it depends what you are looking for, a quieter smaller resort such as Costa Sur or a bigger newer mega resort.
As far as Playa Del Sol being thiefs, you might be right, when I bought my timeshare (fixed week, fixed room) at Costa Sur I paid well under 5K for 30 yrs, from what I hear, Playa Del Sol only sells floating weeks for around 15K. Thinking about buyin a timeshare, check Ebay.

Dear lanhawk, I am surprised to hear that you liked Costa Sur: you were truly fortunate. My experience was very different. You might want to do a google search for "Costa Sur" or "Playa del Sol Costa Sur" and "complaints", "timeshare problems" or similar search terms, I think you'll be surprised by the not too pleasant experience other people are reporting. Costa Sur is approximately 3 1/2 miles south of town, to where the cobble stones begin. There are many other properties that are right in town or much closer that are nicer than Costa Sur.

consider renting a condo in old town. google pv condos for rent. many choices will appear.

Gonozzo,
I just like the location and the people that own there are very friendly. I agreed with you that Playa del sol is a crap company. Playa Del sol bought Costa Vida to be used as an overflow resort to fill requests when Playa Del sol grand was booked. Playa sells people timeshares out at the grand then when they try to book, tells them there is no room and books them into Costa Sur. I am sure people who bought time shares at the mega resort will be disappointed upon their arrival at the sur, who wouldn't be. I suppose it really gets down to personal choice, some people like mega resorts others like smaller more personal resorts.
On the good side, I like the ability to go into town, eat. shop, sightsee, bus stops in front and I like the ability to leave town. With easter week coming and the big crowds, I like to able to leave all that, sit in a pool and chill.

lanhawk, I agree with you on all counts. The first time I stayed at Costa Sur it was Costa Vida and a much more enjoyable place. The second time I stayed there it was Costa Sur and the difference was very apparent. When the Playa Del Sol organization bought it, they ruined it. I was previously an owner at Lindo Mar, about 1/12 mile closer to town, and a really very nice place. If you haven't checked it out , you should. They have a wonderful little restaurant at beach level called La Playita; very good food and service. I bought with Playa del Sol because they said they also had time at Lindo Mar and I hoped to pyramid my time at Lindo Mar. I subsequently learned they had simply bought unsold weeks, mostly in the summer. Never was able to book into Lindo Mar: no availability. They subsequently walked away from there commitment at Lindo Mar. I understand that they are also screwing the people they sold contracts to at Playa del Sol Centro in Old Town and are refusing to honor their contracts and forcing them to go to Playa del Sol Grand out by Buscerias.

Gonzzo,
I second your opinion of the Lindo Mar we went there last year for Sunday Brunch and it was excellent, great food and great service. We got a table right by the water.

Flamingo's Nuevo Vallarta

I have been visiting PV for several years now...My daughter was 2 yrs old on our first trip and is now 6 yrs old and can't hardly wait for our next trip in a few weeks. We stay at the Flamingo's in Nuevo Vallarta. Yes it is a ways from PV...but the Flamingo's worth it for our daughter. We just rent a car to get around. The biggest plus is the pool..it is a paradise for children. There are several shallow spots safe for a young child which allows you the parents to relax a bit without the worries of your child in a deep crowded pool. The beach also seems to be a bit more child friendly. I know the PV area has many wonderful resorts/hotels...I just wanted to share my experience with Flamingo's. Oh and yes the timeshare sales can get a little annoying at times..but nothing a firm "no" won't take care of. Have a wonderful trip.
