STINGRAYS

Post by fubob » Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:22 pm

Something new this trip, we have always stayed close to the marina on our other trips to Puerto Vallarta , this time we stayed at Dreams.

The stingrays were abundant to say the least , something which we never noticed at the other beaches before. Do they migrate like whales or are they always in the bay ?

Any idea why they would be so prevalent at the Dreams beach and we never noticed them before at the other beaches.

You could watch the ocean for 5 minutes and see them jumping , as well when the waves curled you could se them inside.
There was a report of someone getting stung at the hotel when we were there so .....just wondering whats the deal on these things?

We had someone in our party whipped by one two years ago in front of Playa Royale in Paradise Village (Nuevo Vallarta). Luckily, it was a young stingray based on the size of the "whip" and the discomfort didn't last more than a couple of hours.

Stingrays love shallow, sandy areas. They are probably abundant throughout the bay.

Maybe you witnessed mating season and that's why they were above the surface more. How big were they?

We try to always wear water shoes and "shuffle" in the sand to scare the sting rays off.

They come and go off and on. Where they decide to hang out at is anyone's guess, this week the south side, next week Nuevo. Then they disappear and you don't see them for a while and all of the sudden they are back again. They do the same thing in So Cal, so you just have to be observant and watch out for them.

They come in closer because the water is cooler in search of food. A bonus for us watchers even though this is cooler than most years.
