We've driven Phx to Mazatlan in two days (refused to drive at night) stopping at San Carlos for the night at Best Western Hacienda Tetakawi.

We found Sonorans to be rough people and caution must be taken when stopping anywhere along the way. Can't tell you how many times we ran across drug deals taking place in gas station bathrooms in Sonora. Many of the gas stations in Sonora didn't take credit cards. The road is fairly straight but rough with huge drop offs (no shoulders) until closer to Mazatlan. Once you cross over the tropic of cancer you'll notice the change from desert to a hint of what's to come.

We've heard that the drive from Mazatlan to Puerto Vallarta takes one day and is fairly smooth but winds through hills once you get closer to San Blas. Kind of like what you experienced going from PV to San Pancho and further. Remember to check out Platanitos south of San Blas.

Sounds like an adventure to me.

Good luck and have fun.
