Hotel Zone

This is not in any way to disagree with anything Kat says. (I'd be crazy; she's far more knowledgable). If they --and you -- like a downtown vibe, that's the way to go. For something more laid-back for you and if they're outdoor types, the longest stretch of beach is in the hotel zone. they could bo...

Note about US media theories

I think some people on the boards feel there's some kind of conspiracy to defame Mexico. As a former member of the US media, the thought the media could organize such a thing gives them too much credit. With fewer working reporters every day, the remaining outlets take what they can get. If an Ameri...

Last word, please

Please let this one go and move on, as we have. We've learned our lesson about clutch purses and the back streets at night. If there are social-historical issues to be extracted from our experience, please put them in a new thread. There are almost certainly such debates of more general interest and...

Yup

We were the ones who squawked a couple years ago when my wife's purse was snatched about 20 yards away from the door. We'd walked to town from there a couple times before and our luck ran out. (btw, he bumped me from behid first, but I carry my wallet in my front wallet) The thief had to be lurking,...

Casa Kimberly

Just hearing about this. That is indeed a shame. We were fortunate enough to see it when it was open for tours about seven or eight years ago. I'll make sure I don't lose the pictures. It was a great house, simple but elegant.

Link for tsumani travel time

Seek and ye shall find. I did find something giving a clue as to when the pulse will reach the Mexican coast. Approx event plus 13-14 hours. So if that was 9:46 p.m. PST, something could be happening already. Any reports?

A little worried?

I appreciate the posting. We're supposed to arrive tomorrow, during the "alert" (which doesn't sound that specific). I haven't found any scientifically-based information about anything that isn't U.S. But within that, the urgency seems to taper off the farther south they go. http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.g...

Alternative mercado

From you are, you can walk north along the beach to a mercado at the harbor where the cruise ships tie up. (I can't remember if there's a gate through the fence there or whether you have to zig through one of the hotels to the street) Things there used to be cheaper on non-ship days, but ships are t...

Sick? Not

I second what thisisthis just said. I (her aformentioned partner and recently husband) seem to be susceptible to upper respiratory things a couple days after arriving, on about a third of our trips. The only sensible conclusion is it comes from breathing cabin air. And sometimes my digestive tract n...

Over, or under

Our taxis from the airport to Los Tules in the Hotel Zone have averaged $20, and they're glad to take our dollars. We walked over once; it was $12, which is still more than twice as much as coming from the other direction.. Another time, using the spare change we kept from the previous year, we took...

Andale

Ugh! You had to go and mention "Alice!" I'm already getting a hangover.
One year we brought my 25-ish son and a few other under-30s and last year we brought my 28 yr old daughter. They all had a good time. We did too. At least that's what they told me the morning after.

San Blas is a trek. Sayulita's on the coast and a little closer. We were there about eight years ago and planning to go again. There are plenty of places to explore. Go to the Off the Beaten Path section. If you do stay in Mismaloya, it' a short bus ride -- or for three people a cab might be reasona...

Tequila

For tequila, go to a La Playa liquor store or a Soriana grocery store (there's several of each in PV) and browse, and try a couple brands. If you want "sipping" tequila, aim for the higher end reposados. The prices are, as you'd expect, pretty good. If you're just going to make margaritas, almost an...

Bail Money?! (and ATM fees)

I leave the matter of bail money to my lawyer. It's up to him to make sure there's enough for me, my wife, my mistress, himself, my personal doctor, my chauffeur, my masseuse, my chef, and anyone else in my retinue. As I said, I leave it in his hands. In the meantime, I don't understand the perennia...

For this year, we decided to try to beat the crowds by taking an earlier flight. They usually announce boarding for same just as we're getting through, so we'll just get their an hour earlier than we have been. It's crazy though, with that many people flying their airline they can't rent another lan...

Lines for Continental departures

Has anyone noticed whether - now that Continental and United have merged - they're sharing some of the check-in lanes at the airport? In the past, the lines for Continental on a Saturday got 2-3 hours long, snaking the length of the airport, while United might have a dozen or two people waiting. Lat...

pretty good place to shop for basics

Since we stay in the Hotel Zone, at Los Tules, we do most of our shopping for necessities (bananas, sunscreen, coffee, laundry soap, eggs, limes....) at the Soriana in Plaza Caracol. Sometimes, especially on a hot afternoon, we wander around window shopping. Most of the shoppers are locals, which is...

Ask your bank

Please don't take this as rude: Turn your card over and call the 800 number. Your own bank probably knows the answer to most of your question.

I don't know what the limits are, but is there some alternative to needing all that cash all at once? Credit cards, perhaps?

Thank you, Harry

Harry: sorry to hear you had the same experience we had. But at least you confirmed that this person actually exists. And that we're not the only ones who can consider that such an approach, while you're sitting at a meal, can be a bad experience. We have come to expect the gauntlet at the airport, ...
