vacation rental deposits

I have been asked to send a wire transfer to a bank account. This is my first vacation rental. I do not know the agent or the owner....I would prefer giving a credit card number to hold the condo...i find it unusual and inconsiderate to ask for a wire transfer knowing full well I would have no recourse...at all!! OPINIONS AND/OR ADVICE PLEASE
Do you know anybody else who has used this condo owner? Were there any reviews from previous renters? I was a bit nervous the first time I rented from an owner too but so far all our transactions have been great. I'd try to find out some more info about the person. Have you talked to them on the phone? In the end, I guess the only real advice I can give you is "trust your gut". Good luck to you.
