Secretary of Tourism Offers Green Angels Escort

Post by gdremark » Tue Oct 26, 2010 4:32 pm

In an effort to be pro-active when it comes to tourists’ fears of driving the highways from the US/Mexico border to Mazatlán, the Secretary of Tourism has introduced a new program.

The department is offering an escort of Green Angels to accompany your vehicle or caravan to your destination free of charge.

If you wish to take advantage of this program, you will have to email Sectur (Secretary of Tourism) before your departure with the following information:

your name, address and telephone number
the days you will be travelling through Mexico
your destination
The email address for the Secretary of Tourism for this program is:

gruiz@sectur.gob.mx
Attention: Guillermo Enriques Ruiz, Jefe de la Unidad de la Corporación de Angeles Verdes

The Green Angels is a free service offered by the Secretary of Tourism to assist drivers who experience mechanical problems on Mexico’s highways. They monitor the roads checking for stranded drivers, but if a Green Angel truck does not pass by when you need it you can call them at 078.

I've read this in several other places but not sure how it's going to work.

I would assume that they are doing daily trips to different locations and most likely just so far into the interior. I don't think they could do individuals and all the way to say PV or beyond because there are not that many Green Angels.

If anyone has any other info it would be great to let people know.

I also found that the email address doesn't work but this does:

The email address s/b gruiz@sectur.gob.mx NOT gov.mx

Ah, the Green Angels! Great outfit. Once, back in1968, we were driving from Lukeville AZ to Puerto Penasco and had a flat tire. I had just got out of or VW bug and a Green Angel truck stopped. The guys got out their big jack, and within about 4 minutes it was changed. My old VW (1954) sometimes would not start. This was one of those times, so the guys pushed and got us started. Always a very fond memory. Chuck... 8)

I always went to the other side of the pond, San felipe. Always had a great time in those small villages. My brother just got back from San felipe and now the road from Mexicali is 4 lanes all the way.

I never (knock on wood) had a need for them but it is always good to see them on the roads. I hope this doesn't put them in danger since they are unarmed.
