Pesos from dollars …. best way?

Hello All,
It has been about 4 years since we have been to PV and after going yearly for 20 years, we miss it. In the meantime, it seems traveler's checks have more or less vanished in the USA. We used to bring them with us and cash into pesos at downtown banks. Now I am assuming most folks either bring pesos with them or use ATM/debit cards to get peso cash.
Anyone have any suggestions or had any bad experiences with ATMs? We leave in a week, so I would appreciate any information anyone out there might have asap!
