HURRICANE JOHN

Post by ellen » Tue Aug 29, 2006 8:46 pm

Excerpt from Reuters:
Hurricane John is expected to pound Acapulco with wind and rain from Tuesday and then batter other coastal resorts like Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos in the Baja California Peninsula in coming days.

Let's hope it peters out before it does any damage.

Checking the track, I wouldn't say pound PV, but hurricanes do change direction from time to time :-) http://hurricane.terrapin.com/PAC-11E/ftrack.html

:( Do you think this will mean bad weather for next week? My boyfriend will be in Los Cabos Monday and I am going to be in Puerto Vallarta next Friday!

Based on the latest weather models, Cabo should be in store for something. Hopefully it will be only rain but I am not a weatherperson.

Warnings

But hurricane watches and warnings covered a more than 650km stretch of the coast from Tecpan de Galeana - up the coast from Acapulco - to Cabo Corrientes, the southwestern tip on the bay that holds Puerto Vallarta. The resort of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo was in the watch area.

A hurricane warning was called for the centre of that area, ranging northwest from the industrial centre of Lazaro Cardenas toward the port of Manzanillo.

"While the centre of John is forecast to remain offshore, hurricane force winds could spread onshore within the warning area during the next 24 hours," the centre said.

The forecast path would carry the storm out to sea below Los Cabos at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, but forecasters warned that track could vary.

we all do mexibeach... that would be a blessing for sure. at least this isn't like Kenna was a few years ago... then we would be talking a different story that is for sure.....

I think that Jennybean made an excellent post on this topic in another section today that explains why PV is safe. Betting on her being right, but it would be stressful for everyone there anyway.

Our whole Province was extremely warm (30+) and windy (60-80 k winds) yesterday which was a pleasant change. Nobody could go fishing here as their were 4-6 foot waves even in the bay. We were all thinking that these hurricane winds from both sides had leapfrogged the U.S. and came up here, until someone rationally pointed out that with our Prime Minister in Saskatchewan for the day bringing all that hot air from Ottawa, what else could we expect!

That's the link to my posts in the "Weather in PV" topic.

Not saying people should ignore it altogether, far from it, but a direct hit on Vallarta would be HIGHLY unlikely. Residual affects yes, direct hit? Nope. I would be very very surprised if they got more than some hard winds and rain for a day to a day and a half.

Keep referencing the National Hurricane Center link, as they are a far more reliable source of information than the news sites. Please remember these are the same news sources that ran stories for a solid week after Kenna bemoaning the complete destruction of Puerto Vallarta, and showing the same photo from ONE street just off the Malecon - when nothing could be further from the truth. In other words, take it with a big grain of salt kids, unless it's being reported by the locals or the NHC.
