Ocean safety

Post by lilianna » Thu Jun 12, 2008 5:02 pm

Jennybean or anyone else with good advice!

We are staying at the Villa Del Palmar Flamingos Beach Resort and Spa and I was wondering if the ocean is safe to swim in there? I have swam all over in PV and never had a problem, but not in this area and this time I am bringing an infant and would love for her to experience the ocean for the first time but want to be safe. I am more concerned about if there are any river run off that might cause contamination in this area.

TIA

His Majesty has asked Jenny to stay away from his board, but since I'm on the phone with her at the moment, she says the VDPF is not near any rivers or tributaries so it should be OK.

PM me if you want a link to a useful map.

Sorry; don't know the answer to your question.

BTW: Next time you're on the landline with her, say hi from me.

The foam from the plankton bloom is pretty thick. Not sure about health effects, but it sticks to your legs and then attracts sand. Need to hose down any furry critters.

It was bad in April, then got better in May and now worse again.

Yo, I stayed there last summer and it was a pretty sick beach for real. The waves weren't that big but you could boogie board alright. Fun resort, everything is way to expensive there though, we mostly went to Bucerias or walked down the beach and found restaurants, or just made dinner.

You can never be sure what a certain beach will look like on any given day during the summer months. The tide moves the run off from the rivers around. Some of the stuff on the beach is just lots of bark that has been washed off from the trees during heavy rains. This is very normal. It makes the beach look awful, but on close inspection you will see that the water is still clear, just lots of black pieces of bark floating around. Beach quality can be quite variable in the summer. Hopefully the present red tide will be gone by the time you get to PV. When I left last week, I could see from the plane that every beach in Banderas Bay was covered with the ugly foamy stuff. I did see lots of people swimming in it, but I sure wouldn't want to.

According to a friend from Mazatlan, the foam is even up there.

Swimming and wading in the bay

Post by kagnew64 » Fri Jun 20, 2008 5:30 pm

We just returned from PVR on June 13 and we found the foam much
more prevalent around the Malecon than out around the marina area.
Hopefully it will be gone in a few weeks.
One subject I have not seen mentioned lately is Portugese man-o-war.
The eight yearold grandson found one washed up on the beach at Club
Regina. Much too curious for a midwestern boy. We were told milk will
reduce the pain, but that was much later. He was much better after a
nap and completely pain-free the next morning. The wife applied a
topical anesthetic we carry in our first aid kit.

The foam has been around since at least early May, I'm surprised it is still there

Maybe the run off from the Corona Factory?
