How much Tequila can I take home?

Post by spartacus_33 » Wed Apr 17, 2013 3:23 pm

I'm trying to get to the bottom of just how much tequila is allowed in your checked luggage when returning to the states.

I googled it and found many old articles stating 1 liter was allowed per person. I know that's wrong because I have brought back more than that before.

This time we're bringing back the good (expensive) stuff and I don't want to leave any at customs. ;-)

I seemed to remember that it depended on what state your connecting flight (customs) was. We're connecting through Phoenix.

Looking around a little more on Arizona's web sites... I found this:

- Adults 18 and older may bring up to 20 cigarette cartons, 25 cigars, 200 grams of tobacco
- Adults ages 18 and older may bring up to 3 liters of wine, beer or liquor

Can anyone verify that the 3 liter limit is accurate?

3 liters is correct, per person. The smaller 2-3 shot bottles, up to 150ml are considered souviners and you don't have to declare them. I also prefer Dox Equis clara in cans, and usually bring a 12 pack of that home in my check luggage (undeclared) and have never had any problems over allmost 10 years.

Any site that shows the different country's rules?

Post by webmaster » Fri Apr 19, 2013 9:05 am

That's for the States, what about Canada? I wonder if there a site that aggregates the different country's rules... let me check.

Mexico's rules are: http://www.puertovallarta.net/fast_facts/duty_free.php

Here are the rules for Canada & USA

Post by webmaster » Fri Apr 19, 2013 9:10 am

1 liter is for Canada: http://www.dutyfreecanada.com/customs-allowances/

This site has rules for most countries, I wonder if they are always correct as it states the US 1 liter too of spirits...

http://www.worlddutyfree.com/informatio ... ances.html

This site also staes only 1 liter: http://www.taxfreetravel.com/US%20Duty% ... mptions%20

Where did you get the 3 liter rule?

Greetings,

M.

Actually Canada is one 40 oz bottle of hard liquor if you can find one anymore. And those are British oz, higher than American.

(Roughly 1.1 litres)

Yeah that's traveling INTO Mexico, you asked:
in your checked luggage when returning to the states
so those rules you are quoting are not what you need...

Or am I not understanding something?

Definately only 1 liter per person over age 21 unless the state you are entering first has a different age. Chuck... 8)

WOW....you were correct, that information was for coming into Mexico.
So... I went to the US CUSTOMS web site and found that 1 liter will be duty free... but you CAN BRING MORE... but MAY be subject to duty fees and taxes: https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail ... m%20Mexico

Steve,
That doesn't include the amount you can consume before you get on the plane. :)

Are they not taking alcohol tests before you go into the plane, or that for pilots only? In any case, yes, the best idea is to get so stinking drunk on Tequila while in Vallarta that the terrible hangover makes all future intake of the liquor impossible. Happened to me in Acapulco once with some awful tequila blanco with ether or whatever, later with a Sauza Hornitos binge and I never drank a lot of tequila again.

Bought a Don Julio and it lasted at least a year or two... Good idea? Eh? ;-)

Here is a link to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
The state limit applies only to residence of that state. Chuck... 8)

Apparently you didn't read my previous post Chuck. I already posted this link.
This thread should probably be closed.
Thanks everyone.

For the record. We brought home 3 liters each in both checked bags and no one cared or even asked. All 8 bottles were claimed on my form as well.

OK...

What does that mean then? That the rules are not valid, that you just have to take a risk, or that the rules are there to be broken?... :-)

We regularly take 3 litres each back. They have just never checked. It has been 16 years.
