Under 2 weeks now...any recommendations for these wonderful treats and where I can find some great ones, is much appreciated.

Takos Pancho (I might be off on the spelling! - it's just off Olas Altas on Basillo Badillia (again - spelling?) . Tiny spot with tables inside and one or two out on the sidewalk. it's next door to Cafe D'Olla. (That spelling doesn't look right either! - must be the minus 46 wind chill this morning - the brain is frozen!)

Anyway - awesome tacos - we eat there several times a trip - can't go wrong with most items on their menu!

Enjoy!

I second the recommendation of Takos Panchos on Basilio Badillo. I also recommend Carboncitos north of the Malecon. From the gas station , head towards the beach and you will see it. (street taco stand, but do not fear!)

I love what they call Volcanos. A small flat tortilla with the pastor, pineapple slice and cheese and cilantro, which I leave off..

Yes, don't miss the Volcanoes. SO YUMMY! I have them put everything on!! They sort of taste like Hawaiian pizza to me. (canadian bacon and pineapple). But you can't go wrong with anything there.

These directions are going to be a bit vague but here goes. It's called Pepe's (not Pipi's) and it is a few blocks north of the Ley grocery store, across the street from the Pemex gas station. Deee licious tacos al pastor for about a buck. I can't wait to get back there.

That is called a: TROMPO - and for the record it is hundreds of layers of thinly sliced marinated pork, stacked on the rod that spins next to an open flame/heat source.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_pastor

The owner will then carve pieces off that are done when you order your Taco's

I can't wait to be back in PV...

Hey Chevy Man - next time you visit your local mall - check out the Greek take out place in the food court - they will have gyro meat - which is cooked the same way but spiced differently from the Mexican version .

and it is usually lamb, Beef or Venison...the Mexican version is almost always pork, if not mistaken.

Is it safe to eat that stuff? I just think that it is hanging there in a very warm weather for a few days, don't you think it gets spoiled? It looks delicious, I have a hard time resisting to try it when we go by the place on the Malecon I Think it calls el Malecon?

The meat spins on its axle, and there is a heat source behind it. It is a vertical rotisserie, basically. So it is cooking and staying hot, at least around the surface. They trim cooked, hot meat from the edge of the chunk, to serve to customers. Generally safe, but look for the stands that look clean and have lots of customers! Takos Panchos, mentioned above, is not a street stand but in a building, so keeping the place clean is easier for them.

Some cooks routinely cut the pork from the main chunk, and then place it on a griddle, chopping it up and cooking it further, so it is definitely cooked thoroughly. You can watch before you buy, to see if this is their procedure.

If it wasn't safe to eat they would be out of business.
