I'm not an authority on the subject, but I don't think you can generally bring back prescription medicines that you purchased in Mexico. Although there are some exceptions to the FDA rule, I doubt something so commonly available in the U.S., like Amoxicillin, would qualify as an exception.
Here is a reference text from U.S. Customs: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/alert ... _drugs.xml

That being said, you can purchase Amoxcilina at any of the farmacias in PV. I have only purchased it in capsule form, in Mexico.

Be careful. Mexico law only allows you to carry on your person or in your luggage only enough medication for personal use and you MUST have a perscription from a Mexican Doctor. If you do not have the script, you will be thrown in jail. A perscription from s US doctor is not good enough.

And remember that you are guilty until proven otherwise.

I too am not an expert, but I am under the impression you can buy drugs such as antibiotics in Mexico without a prescription, only drugs with potential for abuse, such as valium and anabolic steroids need a Rx. If the word 'controlado'' is used, it means that the drug is controlled and you can not buy it over the counter without a prescription from a Mexican doctor.

Drugs bought in Mexico must be for individual use, so you might be questioned bringing back 5-6 bottles of one drug.

I am pretty sure that antibotics don't need a prescription in Mexico, also. You will have to walk back to the pharmacist's area because they probably won't be found on the regular aisles. Strangely enough, there are over-the-counter sleep aid medications in the U.S. that are sold prescription-only in Mexico.

I have seen some unintentional abuse of antibiotics in Mexico. When some people start to feel flu symptoms coming on, they will start taking antibiotics. But, according to my scant medical knowledge, antibiotics are effective against bacteriological infections and not against viral infections, like the flu. Maybe that's one good reason that antibiotics are dispensed under a doctor's supervision in the U.S.

You can buy most antibiotics over the counter at the local farmacias or at the Giagante, Mega, Super Wal-Mart.... We try to get amoxicillian when we are down there and bring back as much as we want... we haven't been questioned yet... and we have been going for 15 years.... and i know of other people that have gone to the farmacia and told them their symptons and got the meds they needed. some of the farmacists have a better medical degree than some of the local doctors... I know we had that problem when my wife scraped her ankle and then got an infection in it... we hobbled across the street to the farmacia and show her the leg, and she pulled out the meds, told us what to do... and within 36 hrs the swelling was down and she was up and running again... and we have seen people get their previcid, prozac, viagra, whatever from the farmacies with out batting an eye...

Thank you all for all your info, just got back yesterday, with 6 bottles, no problem, made by the same company.

I buy legal precrition drugs in Mexico and have never ben told I could not. You don't need a prescription- they sell it over the counter. Everyone I know does.We live on the Texas coast- close to Mexico.
