Mexcaltitan trip

Post by gregillinois » Sun Jul 13, 2008 8:20 pm

Anyone been there. Sounds great-home of the Aztecs, town on in a lake etc. Is it hard to get to? Why is there so little info out there?

It is a ways past San Blas which would make it too far for a day trip. I found an article that pretty much describes what is there...

Given the lack of “must-see” sights, and slight effort involved in reaching the island, Mexcaltitán receives very few foreign tourists. This is a plus for the tourist who does show up, as the residents are unjaded and happy to chat with visitors. Unless you have your own boat, the only way to reach Mexcaltitán is via a public lancha (simple, small motorboat) from La Batanga. A taxi or combi from Santiago Ixcuintla will drop you off directly in front of the dock.

Sounds like a neat place to see if it was not so far...the motel accomodations in one of the travel blogs I read sound pretty sparse. If you absolutely can never get your fill of shrimp it sounds like the place to go.

Thanks captain's mate. We will be in Sayulita and they said 90 minute drive ot San Blas and then another 50 minutes to the lake around Mecaltitan. The travel articles recommend the museum which has purported Aztec history. Plus pictures of the town look like ancient Mexico City (circle road around island, 4 roads lead to center plaza). Anyhow we hope to go but do the above travel times seem reasonable?

90 minutes to san blas seems optimistic. it used to take about 4 hours but there is a new coastal highway that bypasses tepic so maybe it is 90 minutes.

I would allow 140 minutes to San Blas. Never been past there so cannot help with the rest.
