Participate in Highway Clean-Up!

Post by burchern » Tue Jul 13, 2010 6:26 pm

Three of Puerto Vallarta’s most well-known companies; Botanical Gardens of Puerto Vallarta, Canopy Las Juntas y Los Veranos and Vallarta Adventures, are teaming to remove garbage from a well-traveled highway to beautify the area, improve environmental conditions and boost tourism in a one-day volunteer driven event.

The companies contacted PEACE, a local non-profit, to facilitate the project. Community Pride, one of four main programs at PEACE, demonstrates the importance of protecting the environment through recycling, composting, organic farming and green business projects and also conducts community beautification events such as recycled parks and river cleanups.

“The garbage on the highway is ruining what should be a trip to a tropical paradise,” says Robert Price, Founder and Curator of the Botanical Gardens. Price initiated the highway clean-up project and intends to create a long-term plan in order to keep the south-bound highway clean and welcoming.

Volunteers will be picking up trash on Carretera del Sur from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Juntas y Los Veranos on Saturday July 31st. They will meet at 10 A.M. at the entrance to Boca de Tomatlan, next to the bus stop.

“I’m hoping to get fifty volunteers from different organizations in order to clean as much as we can,” said Nicole Majewski, Volunteer and Event Coordinator at PEACE. “We can’t have enough hands!”
