Donations Needed for PEACE "Work for Food" Program

Post by burchern » Fri Nov 26, 2010 12:38 am

Town beautification and improvement jobs are underway in Punta de Mita and Higuera Blanca, as community members identify town needs and create jobs for themselves, cleaning and separating garbage from fields, plazas, and schools in return for donated food and cleaning supplies.

The high-demand “Work for Food” program initiated by local non-profit, PEACE, grew out of flood relief efforts in September and continued to expand due to the consistent increase in job loss and need.

Two hours of work provides seventy pesos worth of food and cleaning supplies, which can feed a family of four for one day. Donated clothes are also sold at very low prices, providing additional funds for food and cleaning supplies as well as affordable clothing.

“We hope to grow this program so that we can eventually open up a donated goods store,” said Molly Fisher, Founder and Director of PEACE. “Ideally, workers will earn a certain amount of credit and be able to shop for whatever suits their needs in a dignified way.”

PEACE is in need of donations to continue this successful program. Oil, tuna, rice, beans, cleaning supplies and clothes are suggested and will be picked up by PEACE staff at any of the following locations:

“This program provides an incredible cycle of development, both economically and environmentally,” Fisher said. “but the most powerful benefits are the feelings of self-empowerment and satisfaction that accompany the ability to provide for loved ones.”
