There are thousands of visitors from Canada and the US there for New Years. I highly recommend staying away from the Malecon. It is a mob scene and last year a friend of mine got knocked down by the crowd. It is much nicer at the street dance on Olas Altas.

Vallarta and the surrounding area have the most memorable fireworks display at midnight. All around the bay the fireworks go off at the same time, with the one in Vallarta lasting the longest. Make sure you are near (on!) the beach so that you can get a good view of the whole bay.

If there's a drawback, it's the amount of people. It is VERY hard to get around. I've walked from the south side to Centro faster than the cars were driving it!

Nonetheless, I's recommend being there for at least one New Year's.

And yes, ending up on Olas Altas' street party is a good way to finish off the evening.
