Next week at this time I will be enjoying a Don Julio (on the rocks) waiting for Alice at Andale! I've been going to PV every Feb/March for the last 9 years. Andale and Roxy have always been fun for me. 8)

For the real salsa lovers got to Jota Be (JB)!

Post by shnozwma » Fri Feb 13, 2009 10:10 pm

I have been to puerto vallarta about 15 times and the best place that i have found for real salsa dancing is Jota Be. I was told by my friends that work at the resort that it is a world famous salsa club and they have huge dancing tournaments throughout the year. Although it is very local and they were surprised to see a white dude there they loved having me and i was treated like a king. My waiter even took the time to find me a hot senorita to help teach me the salsa moves. The waiter spoke very good english but he may have only been my waiter because none of the others spoke english. He is pretty tall so he is easy to spot. Dancing starts around 11 but I believe that you can go in there for instructions a little earlier. On either fridays or saturdays they have a live salsa band and i must say from the moment they started playing I fell in love with salsa. They also have instructional dvds that you can buy that have english subtitles for fairly cheap. Feel free to ask me any questions as I have been all over puerto vallarta as well as outer laying towns.

Jota Be

Post by shnozwma » Sat Feb 14, 2009 8:26 am

When I went it was either a Friday or Saturday night and the place started to fill up around 12. I think most people came to see the live band that started around 12. Your best bet would be to ask one of the guys at the resort if they might know. I do have 2 small clips of video but im not sure how to post them.

just back from annual stay - have to say we frequent a bar annually
that many others here rave about; without naming name, we had a bad
experience with double invoicing and our argument was met with
comments insinuating gender discrimination (towards our waitress)
our feeling is that this particular establishment has become too complacent.
this mistake was made early in evening - packed crowd and/or our
alcohol intake were not a factor here.
we will take a break from this extremely popular watering hole.

have fun and watch your wallet.

Are you talking about Andale's on Olas Altas?

We'd like to check it out -- we'll be there in less than 2 weeks! Any other recommendations for the 40+ crowd would be appreciated!

Andale's is still fun. If you go up to the bar to buy your drinks, and pay right away, there should be no issue about getting the bill wrong.

We love La Bodeguita del Medio, on the Malecon, but it can be difficult to get seating with a view of the dance floor.

Even though it is definitely a locals hangout, we like to go to Bebotero on the Malecon.

For quieter evenings, I love La Candela for a drink/snack, or River Cafe for drinks and/or dessert. On Friday and Saturday nights, they have live music at Barcelona Tapas (guitarist; no dancing), and that would be a great place to go for drinks/dessert/view. I love the molten chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream. They also have creme brulee.

Have a blast!! We are going in early December, March, and June!!! Cannot wait!

Wow Sally, you really do love PV!!! This is the second year in a row that I have gone. As we stay at the Marina, haven;'t made it to Andale as yet, maybe next year. The 20hr journey door to door from UK to PV makes it hard to go there more than once a year :(

Hmmmm Don Julio....miss him....It is cold out and I keep thinking of dancing the night away at Roxy's. Almost always our last stop of the night. Really only gets good after midnight....May have to try giving JB another chance. I would love to do more salsa dancing. Is it hard to get partners?? I have not taken lessons but generally speaking fo the man can dance I can follow...

Getting dance partners can be hit and miss. If you don't speak any Spanish, it can be difficult. Sometimes the waiters ask people to dance, but just for one song usually. They have to get back to work!

If men don't ask us to dance, my girlfriends and I will dance with each other, no problem. Sometimes this exposure helps to obtain male dance partners! Don't feel that you have to "salsa" dance. Anything goes!!

Mojitos are the signature drink at La Bodeguita, but I love the cosmos there! They serve them in a big martini glass, and they are not very strong.

Have a great time!

Had the mojitos there last time. Remember them from in Cuba. I think it is best if you can get a seat on the main floor. Which night is good to go? We have been there during the week and it was pretty quiet.

Sorry, I just saw your question now. Perhaps you are there already!!!!

Yes, sit on the main floor, definitely. I think it is open all nights, but there is one night per week that the band does not play; I think it is Monday night no band.

Fri and Sat are more crowded, but whenever I have been there, it has been pretty busy. Later is better. I think they close around 1 am.

Have a great time!!!! In reading your posts, I think you gals are a wee bit crazier than my girlfriends and me, and I think we are pretty crazy at times!!

Alice has a new outfit; I'll let it be a surprise!

Nacho Daddy on Basilio Badillo looks fun, but have not eaten there yet.....

If you have never been to Barcelona Tapas, try it. It is great!

Say "hi" to all the waiters at Cafe de Olla from "Sally, Peggy, and Monica." And if you have never seen the special apron there, ask for a fashion show. Remember: limit of one large margarita at Cafe de Olla; never have more than one, and watch it on the complimentary tequila shots as well. You may not remember the rest of the night!

And..........challenge all the gals to go "commando" one night. It is really quite fun and hysterically funny!!! I can just imagine the breeze right now.......

Did enjoy Cafe Olla.....Commando eh??? Tell me you were NOT wearing skirts! LOL... We want to have a "theme" night. Not sure I could convince the other girls of that. We were thinking animal print or something like that. Any other ideas??

So fun to travel with a group of women and I do sometimes think the women are crazier then the men!!

Of course we were wearing skirts and dresses!! I think we were mooning the band at Roxy by the end of the night!!! Out of control!

I also wanted to mention Bebotero on the Malecon, where they have a live band nightly. The action is earlier than Roxy, and there are hardly any gringos in there. We love it. They play English and Spanish rock songs. Cheap beer. We put Viagra samples in the tip jar, so they remember us every time we go there!!!

A theme night........very interesting..........animal prints are a good idea......I'll have to think about that! One time we bought whistles on the second floor of Rizo's and made a scene when we sent shots around the nightclub to various unsuspecting men! Mandala was the place.

The whistles were pretty crappy. Might want to buy them at home somewhere. Or you could do kazoos or just party blowers.

Gotta go for now. More later.......
