Hi there Taylor

Regarding your question on FM3, read this: http://bajaquest.com/faq/fm2_fm3.htm

This is the site you go to for the FM3: http://www.inm.gob.mx/

You would go into the country with an FMM, the one you get on the plane, and then you'd go to the INM to start the paperwork for obtaining an FM3 that would let you stay in the country, one year at a time.

Regarding cheap trips between San Diego and PV, I'd guess a plane would be the option, or how cheap do you want it to be? Bike? :-)

No info on breakfast clubs... what are those anyway?

Greetings

Mogens

The FMM is still used I guess or was it replaced with something else?

What were the FM2 and FM3 replaced with? I imagine they just changed the name as people can't stay in the country without a permit.

There is no longer any FM2. In addition to the 180 day tourist visa, there is a four year temporary resident visa and a resident permanente which you get after 4 years of temporary visas. Both the latter enable you to spend more than 180 days in Mexico.

Yes, I get that (this is for the prior message, not you kcowan). But the FMM is still used, it's the format you fill in when arriving by plane. Maybe they changed that name too (Forma Migratoria Múltiple: FMM).

What is the new permit called then? If it's not an FM3 or FM2 what is it called? There must be a new ID used by visitors and people that want to work in the country, just because they change the names doesn't mean they eliminated them... or am I wrong? Anybody know the details of this?

  • FM3: Permiso de Residente Temporal

    FM2: Permiso de Residente Permanente

Seems the FMM is now called "Permiso de Visitante".
Interesting and important:

"One significant change due to the 2011 “new” law is that visitors in Mexico on tourist/Visitante visas CANNOT apply to change immigration status while inside Mexico. Visitantes must apply at a Consulate first from outside Mexico to get a new Residente Temporal or Residente Permanente. Further, Visitantes must apply for their Mexican residency visas from their home country. The consulates do not issue Residency visas."

Also the old FM3s allowed a foreign-plated vehicle to be maintained, and now only the FMM allows that. IOW the vehicle must be removed when 180 days passes.

Also the new visas are wallet-sized, unlike the old FM3s.

It's complicated. I can no longer give my opinion as things might have changed a lot in the last 6 years
