JET SKIS AT GCP - DISCOUNT

Post by poppy » Fri Sep 19, 2008 2:08 am

The jet ski concession has been owned for many years by Fausto Santana (hence, the name Santana on all the jet skis), the nice young man who sat with his friends and family working the concession for as long as I can remember. Fausto died in July after a long illness, a month before his 40th birthday. He left a wife and three small sons. The concession is now owned by Fausto's family. His nephew, Edgar, is at the ski concession every day. If you ask for Edgar, you will get a discounted rate of $45.00 for the jet ski rental. All the guys who work the concession speak perfect English. The jet skis are well maintained.

Sorry to here of his passing. I had used his services many times but have not been back to the GCP in 3-4 years. I'm glad to see the place is still getting it's share of great reviews.

Long time friend

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Santana family.. We have known Fausto and the boys for 11 yrs since we started coming to the GCP. They always did take care of family, business and made great friends over the years. It is definitely a sad day along the beaches in front of the GCP with the passing of Fausto... He will be remembered forever in our hearts.

Ronald, I could not access your link (so I am not sure what you were wanting to rent) but you will find jet skis at the majority of resorts and all are pretty much the same price. There is a guy from Texas that came down after Kenna when the majority of the jet skis in town had been destroyed since most of the jet skis were not insured the owners went broke. He bought quite a few of the areas around town. Each area has a permit issued by the Federal government and those permits go for a pretty high price when someone decides to sell one. Alot of the areas were purchased by this guy so the prices are pretty much the same around town.

That's to bad... free enterprise turned into a monopoly... by someone who doesn't even live there no less. So: is the concession that this post started out talking about got this guys hands on it somewhere in the background as well?

Ronald,
The guy paid $25,000 and up US for each area he purchased, that was only for the area, not the jet skis needed to operate it.

He came really close to losing it all before he came to his senses. His first mistake was sending his 20 something spoiled brat rich kid down to run the business.

His second mistake was moving into an area that had been occupied by local boat owners for years and trying to take over. The kid thought he was so much better than any of the local guys which immediately started him off on the wrong foot. For years the guys in that area had an agreement with the head schoolmaster at the school next to the area. They supplied cleaning supplies, soccer balls and other supplies the school needed. They kept the weeds and trash out of the school and watched out for the kids. In exchange they were allowed to use fresh water and electricty from the schools for cleaning and necessary repairs to their boats. Those same guys also paid for a road to be made to get back to the area their boats were in. The first thing this kid did was put a box and a lock on the fresh water and the hose. Then he started parking his brand new truck right in the middle of the road so no one could pass. Slowly he learned that mysterious things happen when you try to move in and take over and mess with locals. :D After a while he was run out of town and daddy came down to take over and started much the same thing...he built a workshop on land that did not belong to him so he could do his own fiberglass repairs on his jet skis. Everyone's boats ended up covered with fiberglass dust from him sanding the fiberglass. Then he started trucking in sand so he could build a beach. After they made him tear his workshop down and stop trying to remake the area as his own private area he finally settled down. Now everyone is out of that area due to the ongoing construction.

I guess you can say the saying it takes money to make money holds true for the jet skis. With no insurance when the guys all lost their jet skis in the storm surge from Kenna they went broke. This guy came in with lots of money and the rest is history.
