Puerto Vallarta Among the Unrestricted Travel Destinations for US

According to a press release issued on Thursday, January 11, by the Secretary of Tourism (Sectur),  the U.S. State Department confirmed today that the main tourist destinations in Mexico will not have any travel restrictions.

Cancún, Riviera Maya, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta-Riviera Nayarit and Mexico City, destinations representing 80% of the tourism in the country, were exempted from the new system implemented by the US government.

The new tiered travel advisory system was rolled out yesterday, replacing the old one of alerts, warnings, and security messages. It’s divided into 4 levels: Level 1 (blue): Exercise normal travel, Level 2 (yellow): Exercise increased caution, Level 3 (orange): Reconsider travel, Level 4(red) Do not travel. 

SECTUR also published a list of all the locations in Mexico exempted from the restrictions:

  • Baja California Sur: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo y La Paz
  • Quintana Roo: Cancún, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Riviera Maya, Isla Mujeres e Isla Holbox
  • Ciudad de México
  • Jalisco: Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Chapala y Ajijic
  • Nayarit: Riviera Nayarit, Punta Mita, Nuevo Vallarta, Santa Maria del Oro y Xalisco
  • Guanajuato: Guanajuato y San Miguel de Allende
  • Yucatán: Chichen Itzá, Mérida, Uxmal y Valladolid
  • Puebla: Ciudad de Puebla
  • Chiapas: Palenque, San Cristóbal de las Casas y Tuxtla Gutiérrez
  • Baja California: Ensenada, Rosarito y Tijuana
  • Oaxaca: Ciudad de Oaxaca y Huatulco
  • Campeche: Ciudad de Campeche
  • Querétaro: Santiago de Querétaro
  • Coahuila: Piedras Negras y Ciudad Acuna
  • Sinaloa: Mazatlán (Zona Dorada, Centro Histórico), Los Mochis, Port Topolobampo
  • Michoacán: Morelia y Lázaro Cárdenas (llegando vía aérea o carretera federal 15D)
