Every year in December, Puerto Vallarta Garden Club members look forward to celebrating the season at our annual holiday luncheon. This year's party, set to take place at The River Café on Wednesday, December 5th at 12:00 noon, promises to be a festive affair!

A delicious buffet will be served and holiday entertainment will be provided by the talented pianist, Jean-Guy Comeau, who many of you know as one of Puerto Vallarta's most accomplished musicians.

Jean-Guy has been performing in different venues in Puerto Vallarta, such as Los Mangos Cultural Center and Library, The Palm Cabaret, Boutique Theatre and Incanto, for several years. A member of the "Vallarta Vocalist Ensemble," he is also an accomplished singer who enjoys being part of the local cultural scene, making music with wonderful musicians and presenting interesting repertoire in the field of jazz, classical and Latin music.

"Mi Amigo Sin Pelo" is  set to be held on December 16, 2018 from 5:00 to 10:00 pm at Los Arcos del Malecón.

Organized by the Asociación Femenil Vallartense (Vallarta Women's Association) to raise funds for children's cancer treatments, the event is in its 10th consecutive year and aims to raise public awareness; to unite and empathize with those who suffer from this disease. Translating literally to "My Friend Without Hair," the event features all kinds of family-friendly fun and games, including a zipline provided by the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department, and the public is invited to actively participate by making contributions and/or by cutting their hair as a solidarity gesture.

All of the event's proceeds will benefit the Center for Children with Cancer (CANICA). Each year more than a thousand children and young people are diagnosed with cancer in Jalisco, and the center provides support for minors in Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, and other parts of the state.

The President of the Vallarta Women's Association, Evelia Basañez, said that they are currently providing financial support to 15 Puerto Vallarta families whose children are receiving treatment for cancer in Guadalajara. These families must travel to the capital city up to four or five times every month, and the money raised will be used to help solve transportation problems in getting these children to the treatment center.

The SETAC Community Center is holding its second annual Red Ribbon Gala at Mantamar Beach Club on Wednesday, December 5. Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS arranged for two highly-talented Broadway performers to come entertain the crowd at the Gala. Event organizer Robert Schley from Mexico Event Design recently interviewed Mr. Viola in-depth about his organization and their commitment to the local Puerto Vallarta community.

How long have you been active with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS? I’ve been a part of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS since its inception. In 1988, with many of its own members facing dire circumstances, the Council of Actors’ Equity–the union for actors and stage managers–set out to fight HIV and AIDS within its own community. Equity Fights AIDS was created as a committee of Actors’ Equity.

On Friday, November 23rd, 2018, San Javier Marina Hospital celebrated its 18th anniversary of operations in Puerto Vallarta.

To commemorate it, the local and foreign community, as well as patients and doctors, met in the hospital to enjoy a cocktail, which led to the cutting of the ribbon that opened the Galería de Sonrisas (Gallery of Smiles), an initiative that collects testimonials from patients with extraordinary case studies, where they share their stories of hope.

It is a temporary exhibition located in the main lobby of the Hospital San Javier Marina, which aims to share the philosophy of humane treatment that the institution has implemented since its founding in 2000 in Puerto Vallarta.

The Galería de Sonrisas is open to the general public and can be visited 24/7.
