Estero El SaladoPuerto Vallarta is distinguished and privileged by its biodiversity. As one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth, this destination is a natural sanctuary, where rivers, tropical jungles, mountains and sea come together to provide a wide variety of eco-tourism options and an endless array of outdoor adventures.

One example is the Estero El Salado, an urban eco-reserve in the heart of the city's hotel zone comprising 169 hectares, of which approximately 135 correspond to mangrove vegetation and wetlands; the rest is made up by two medium forest remnants bordered by water and underwater vegetation, thorn forest and secondary vegetation.

Its connection to the ocean is permanent through a channel that is nearly 20 meters wide, 3 meters deep, and 2 kilometers long that leads to the port's bay. Its landscape and habitat characteristics are favorable to tropical birds, clusters of colorful crabs, amphibians and reptiles, as well as other wildlife.

The estuary is home to over 100 species of birds in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Over 29 amphibians and reptiles have been identified, along with 10 mammal species and a variety of invertebrates and fish characteristic to mangrove areas.

Turtle Release 1

The mystery of witnessing an adult sea turtle can be a life changing experience, and during the summers in Puerto Vallarta, you can watch 6 out of the 8 sea turtles in the world.

Summer in PVR is a very special time of the year. Besides being the perfect season for vacations, it is possible to witness an amazing natural event: the spawning of 6 of the 8 species of sea turtles in the world.

The cycle begins when females retrun to the beach to spawn near 100 eggs in approximately 3 hours. After 45 days approximately the eggs hatch, and the offspring heads to the sea. Someday, as an adult, these same females will return to the exact same beach where they were born to begin a new cycle.

PVR has several programs created to sustain the sea turtle's environment and ecology. They highlight the importance of preserving these species besides inviting locals and tourists to witness their path to the sea. The experience of observing how the offspring has its first contact with the ocean is the most magical, moving and unmissable spectacle.
