Birds of Paradise in the Botanical Garden

The south of Puerto Vallarta hosts beautiful natural landscapes where the high deciduous forest is home to several species of flora and fauna, among which tropical birds, such as the ferruginous pygmy owl, trogons, some parakeets and woodpeckers and even some chachalacas with its characteristic calls. In this site we find, located between the tropical highlands of Jalisco, the Vallarta Botanical Garden. Maintained by donations from locals and foreigners, it’s located about 1300 feet above sea level, next to the Horcones River. The Garden was created with the vision of being a site for reforestation, conservation and study of native flora, such as agaves, cacti, magnolias and orchids, as well as other exotic species of visual appeal. Due to its location and the efforts of those who work there, some areas have become key places for the nesting of species with high ecological importance, such as the Mexican hermit. In addition, it provides shelter and food to yellow-winged caciques, San Blas jays, woodpeckers, various species of hummingbirds, orioles and many other species of tropical birds throughout the year.

El Tuito: Birds of the Southern Sierra

Located one hour away from Puerto Vallarta is El Tuito, settled in the green mountains of Cabo Corrientes municipality. This town has the beauty of a typical Mexican town of yesteryear, with cobblestone streets and traditional architecture, along with all modern comforts and facilities. In addition to this, it is one of the best birding destinations in and around Puerto Vallarta, due to its location. The mountains surrounding El Tuito are a transition zone for various bird species, many species in southern Mexico and Central America have their northernmost limits in this region. Climate here is temperate throughout the year and among the vegetation of the area conifers are abundant as well as oaks and walnuts, along with various fruit trees that provide food and home to the wide variety of birds that we can find here, among which stand out the yellow grosbeak, the blue mockingbird, the elegant and the Citreoline trogon and the endemic flagellated flycatcher. About 3 km from El Tuito we find Rancho Primavera, another paradise for bird watching. Its 200 acres are designated Environmental Management Unit, as the owners restored and are protecting the flora and fauna of the site, recovering many native species of ...

La Desembocada and Ameca River Birds

On the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta we find a quiet town called La Desembocada. This village, located at the foot of the mountains in the valley formed by the Ameca River, is mainly devoted to agriculture, with corn, pumpkin, sorghum and mangoes as the main harvests. Its location and the presence of small rivers and streams, as well as farmland, make this place an ideal place for bird watching. The area is considered a tropical sub-deciduous forest, so we can see the crane hawk, the elegant quail, as well as various species of warblers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, hummingbirds, trogons, parrots, among others. The Ameca River divides the states of Nayarit and Jalisco. Its channel ends in the Banderas Bay, forming a wide area of wetlands, which attract both marine and terrestrial birds, either to feed or rest. On the beach that forms its mouth we find the Boca de Tomates estuary, site where we can find white ibis, herons, egrets, sandpipers, terns, and, with a bit of luck, a kingfisher or the common black hawk.

Baby Sea Turtle Release

An exciting opportunity to interact with live sea turtles that is only available to a select few people. Puerto Vallarta is one of the only places in the world where sea turtles rise from their ocean environment and make their way onto the beach where they will build a nest and lay their eggs. In this Experience now you can join us on our mission to help the baby turtles survive their trek from the nest to the sea, and ensure that the next generation of beautiful sea turtles is strong and healthy. Your tour begins with a discussion of the turtles and the importance of their protection by your expert Biologist guides, who have been featured on Animal Planet and in National Geographic Magazine. We will visit the nursery, nests, and the turtle camp. We will see all the baby turtles that were born during the day, then walk along the beach looking for females laying eggs. At the end of the tour, we will release the baby sea turtles and help them get safely to their natural ocean habitat.

Turtle Camp Adventure Ecotours

During summer, the coast of Banderas Bay gives refuge to the female sea turtles that leave the security of the ocean to venture into one of the most important stages of their lives: lay their eggs in the warm sand of our beaches to be incubated by the sun. Once they spawn, the females return to the sea, trusting the next generation to Nature. When the young are ready to hatch, volunteers who have taken care of the nest for approximately 50 days, guard them until sunset to release them once the sun is gone, minimizing the risk of being prey to birds, fish and other natural predators. Our adventure provides an encounter with this miracle. By joining this tour, in addition to helping the baby turtle hatchlings reach the ocean, you will support the hard work of a dedicated team of Mexican biologists and volunteers to increase the survival rate of Olive Ridley sea turtle, which is in danger of extinction. You will also know what is done in a turtle camp and you can even “plant” your own turtle nest.

Encounter with Nature at the Sea Turtle Camp

We can find six out of the seven species of sea turtle recognized worldwide nesting in Mexican seashores, all of them under complete federal protection since 1990. To Puerto Vallarta beaches comes mostly the species known as Olive Ridley or Golfina, in Spanish, (Lepidochelys olivacea). Hiking and snorkeling at Colomitos

The south of Puerto Vallarta has great natural attractions, where the tropical coast and the low deciduous forest of the Mexican Pacific meet in enchanting landscapes, worth exploring. In this tour your guide will take you through the mountain along a path used for decades to reach the villages on the south of the Bay, while pointing out and explaining about the different types of vegetation found on the site, such as gigantic fig trees, beautiful plumerias and hibiscus, leafy cecropias and “papelillos”, as well as the most common animals of the site, among which sea and mountain birds and green and black iguanas stand out. During the hike, beautiful views of the bay are shown and when descending from the mountain path, vegetation opens to give way to a small soft-sanded beach: Colomitos. Famous for being one of the smallest beaches on the coast of Banderas Bay, this cove is home to various underwater attractions, such as pufferfish, angelfish, damselfish, sea urchins and even, with a bit of luck, you can find rays and sea turtles. After our snorkeling activity, there will be an opportunity to enjoy a few minutes on the beach before starting our hike back.
