Puerto Vallarta is preparing to host one of Mexico’s most prestigious equestrian events, the Vallarta International Charro Championship 2026. From Thursday, January 29, to Sunday, February 1, the Lienzo Charro Miguel “Prieto” Ibarría will become the center of Mexican cowboy culture. This four-day tournament brings together the best athletes from across Mexico and the United States to compete in the traditional sport of Charrería, which is recognized by UNESCO as a vital piece of world heritage.
The competition features a top-tier lineup of 30 teams, including legendary champions like Charros de Jalisco and the reigning national titleholders, El Soyate. Spectators can expect to see incredible displays of skill in nine different events, ranging from daring bareback riding to expert roping. In addition to the men’s events, 24 Escaramuza teams will perform. these are groups of women who ride sidesaddle in beautiful traditional dresses, performing fast-paced, synchronized maneuvers that require immense bravery and precision.
Beyond the action in the arena, the championship is a full cultural festival. On Friday night, January 30, the popular “Maleconeada” parade will take over the downtown Malecón starting at 11:45 p.m., featuring horsemen and live music. On Saturday night, guests can enjoy a special “Dancing Horses” exhibition. Throughout the weekend, the venue will also host a commercial area with Mexican crafts, traditional food stalls, and a dedicated zone for children, making it a perfect event for families.
