The Puerto Vallarta city council, led by Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González, has officially approved a formal request to Mexico’s federal environmental agency, SEMARNAT. The goal is to clarify the current legal status of the Los Arcos de Mismaloya area and fast-track its designation as a Protected Natural Area (ANP). This move represents a major step toward ensuring the long-term preservation of one of the region’s most iconic natural landmarks.
This government action follows a strong show of community support on January 14, when local residents from Mismaloya presented a petition demanding a stop to any potential privatization of the coast. By seeking a formal federal decree, the city hopes to create a permanent legal shield that prevents private development and guarantees that the “Arches” remain a public treasure for all to enjoy.
Mayor Munguía González emphasized that the administration stands firmly with the citizens in their fight to protect their territory and the environment. Declaring the area a Protected Natural Area would not only safeguard the beach access but also preserve the critical habitat for hundreds of marine and bird species that call the rock formations home.
