January and February are the busiest and most exciting months for whale watching in Puerto Vallarta. During this peak time, hundreds of humpback whales are highly active in Banderas Bay after their long journey from the cold waters of Alaska and Canada. The bay serves as a vital sanctuary where these massive marine mammals come to mate, socialized, and give birth in the warm Pacific waters.
The calm, shallow environment of the region provides the perfect nursery for newborn calves. Mothers spend these months teaching their young how to swim and dive before they begin their long migration back north in late March. Because the whales are so active right now, visitors often witness spectacular displays of breaching, tail-slapping, and rhythmic blowhole mists right from the shore or out on the water.
You don’t always need a boat to catch the show. Whales are frequently spotted from the downtown Malecón, Marina Vallarta, and southern beaches like Los Muertos and Conchas Chinas. For a closer look, many people choose specialized tours led by marine biologists. These experts often use underwater microphones, called hydrophones, to let guests hear the whales’ haunting and beautiful songs, adding a whole new layer to the experience.
