On Thursday, March 26, 2026, Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas officially launched the Semana Santa 2026 Security Operation. This coordinated effort between Jalisco and Nayarit involves hundreds of military and civilian personnel, including the Navy, National Guard, and local Municipal Police. The operation, which runs through April 12, is designed to manage the massive influx of domestic and international travelers during Mexico’s busiest holiday period.
A critical component of this year’s strategy is the deployment of a specialized Search and Rescue (SAR) team from the 12th Naval Zone. Equipped with high-speed Defender-class vessels, the Navy guarantees a response time of just three to five minutes for emergencies along the bay’s busiest beaches. Additionally, approximately 70 medical and paramedical personnel have established first-aid stations at strategic points like Playa Los Muertos, the Malecón, and Nuevo Vallarta to treat everything from minor heat exhaustion to water-related incidents.
Tourism officials are projecting an exceptionally strong season, with hotel occupancy expected to average 85% throughout the two-week period. During the “Holy Days” (Jueves and Viernes Santo, April 2–3), occupancy is forecast to soar as high as 95%. Travelers are advised to follow the “flag system” on beaches and respect road closures near the downtown core, as authorities prioritize pedestrian safety for the religious processions and nightly festivals that define the Semana Santa experience.
