The bridge connecting Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas could be finished by July or August 2026, three months ahead of the original November deadline. The structure is now visible between San Vicente and Ixtapa. Workers have made significant progress on both the main span and the access roads. Once complete, the bridge will cut travel time between the two municipalities by roughly 25 minutes.
Right now, traffic between Puerto Vallarta and the northern parts of Bahía de Banderas, including Sayulita and San Pancho, bottlenecks through the Libramiento tunnel and the old highway. The new bridge creates a direct connection across the Ameca River, bypassing the worst of the congestion. For visitors flying into Puerto Vallarta International Airport and heading north to Riviera Nayarit destinations, this means shorter transfer times and less stress. The bridge also opens up easier access to taxi and private transfer services connecting the airport corridor to the broader region.
Some concerns remain. Local officials have raised questions about how Avenida Federación on the Vallarta side will handle the increased traffic flow. The connecting infrastructure needs to match the bridge capacity, or the bottleneck simply shifts to a new location. Still, the accelerated timeline is welcome news for a region preparing for World Cup 2026. Major infrastructure projects finishing ahead of schedule is not something you see often in Mexico, and this one could be ready just in time for the tournament.
