Vallarta to Inaugurate First Official Municipal Archive Office

For the first time in its history, Puerto Vallarta will establish a dedicated space to preserve and digitize its collective memory. The Office of the Municipal Chronicle and City Memory is set to open its doors by the end of April 2026, serving as a vital hub for students, researchers, and tourists interested in the region’s rich historical evolution. City Chronicler and historian Moisés Hernández López confirmed that the project is in its final stages, moving from a conceptual plan to a fully materialized physical headquarters.

The new office is designed to be more than a simple library; it will be a high-tech documentation center equipped with specialized tools for the high-resolution digitalization of photographs and historical manuscripts. A key feature of the project is a public reception area where citizens are encouraged to donate or share private family archives to help build a more comprehensive historical record. The collection will cover not only the city’s urban history but also broader historiography from the Western Sierra Coast region.

Beyond preserving the past, Hernández López emphasizes that his daily mission involves documenting the present to create the city’s first systematic Annual Yearbooks. By recording current social, political, and cultural events as they happen, the office aims to prevent the loss of information for future generations. This initiative marks a significant step toward establishing the city’s first formal Historical Archive, providing a foundational legacy that makes Vallarta’s history accessible, attractive, and useful for educational and tourism sectors alike.
