Puerto Vallarta has begun rolling out Nidos de Lluvia, a Jalisco-backed rainwater-harvesting program aimed at helping rural families and schools capture, filter and store seasonal rainfall for domestic use.
Contralínea reports that the program is being implemented locally by the Government of Jalisco in coordination with Puerto Vallarta City Hall and Seapal Vallarta. The first target is concrete: 100 families in rural communities and three schools. Vallarta Hoy separately reported the same initial goal and noted that participating families will need to register for the program.
The systems are designed to collect rainwater from rooftops, move it through filtering and treatment components, and store it so households can use it for everyday needs. For a destination where the rainy season is both intense and essential, the project turns seasonal water into a practical resource for communities outside the main tourism corridors.
Information meetings were scheduled for El Aguacate on July 30 and Ojo de Agua on July 31, with the latter also serving nearby areas including Arboledas, El Mirador and Nuevo Amanecer. Applicants were asked to bring a valid official ID and proof of address. For visitors, the story is also a reminder that Puerto Vallarta’s appeal depends on the surrounding mountains, rivers and ecotourism and nature areas that feed its waterfalls and rural communities.
