Puerto Vallarta Airport Reinforces Sanitary Inspections

Jalisco is reinforcing sanitary inspection support at its international airports, including Puerto Vallarta, with trained canine teams and specialized agro-food safety staff.

The state’s Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, through ASICA, deployed five canine teams trained by SENASICA to support federal inspections at the Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta airport terminals. Contralínea reported that the effort has been active since May and has helped review more than 53,000 suitcases at both airports.

The checks focus on identifying food, plant and animal products that can represent a sanitary risk before they enter Jalisco. Officials said the non-intrusive teams work under the supervision of OISA, the federal agricultural inspection office. One of the dogs, Havana, is a rescued three-year-old mixed-breed dog now trained for the work.

For travelers, the practical takeaway is simple: review Mexico’s customs and food-entry rules before packing gifts, snacks or pet-related items, and answer inspection questions clearly after landing. The reinforced checks are another reason to keep arrival plans flexible when moving from baggage claim to the public lobby described in PV.net’s Puerto Vallarta airport arrivals guide.
