Businesses Unite to Revitalize Vallarta’s Downtown

In response to a decline in tourist activity and spending, a coalition of business organizations in Puerto Vallarta has presented an integrated strategic plan to the municipal government. The proposal, titled “Initiatives for the Strengthening of Tourism in Puerto Vallarta,” aims to revitalize the city’s downtown core by addressing key challenges identified in a new report.

According to the business groups (Coparmex, Canaco, and Canirac), a report titled “A 2025 with Signs of Wear” revealed troubling signs of a slowdown in the city’s tourism sector. Data from the first half of the year showed a drop in tourist arrivals and consumption. During Easter Week 2025, for example, hotel occupancy was lower than expected, with some properties reporting rates as low as 40%. The summer of 2025 was also disappointing, as over 40% of surveyed business owners reported “much lower” occupancy rates than in previous years, and over 70% noted that tourists were spending “low or very low” amounts.

The proposal emphasizes the need for a collaborative approach involving the government, businesses, and civil society. By focusing on Puerto Vallarta’s gastronomic, cultural, and social strengths, the plan aims to increase tourist spending, reactivate the economy, and ensure the city’s long-term sustainability as a competitive and prosperous destination.
