Puerto Vallarta will host a free traditional mariachi concert on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. at Los Arcos del Malecón, giving visitors and residents a waterfront look at one of Jalisco’s oldest musical traditions.
The performance is Puerto Vallarta’s public stop in the 25th National Traditional Mariachi Gathering, held September 8-12 under the motto “Fandango y Tradición, 25 Vueltas al Son.” Jalisco cultural officials said the institutional program will reach 14 municipalities, including Puerto Vallarta. Local reports place the free evening concert at the Malecón amphitheater at 8:00 p.m. on September 9.
Unlike the commercial mariachi most visitors hear in restaurants, traditional ensembles skip trumpets. They rely on violins, vihuelas, guitarras de golpe, and guitarrones, a rural western Mexico sound that UNESCO recognizes as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The gathering brings together 30 groups. Seven caravans of about 35 to 45 musicians each will play plazas, gardens, schools, and churches across Jalisco. One reported caravan route pairs Mascota with Puerto Vallarta.
Ximena López Nakashima, director of Cultural Heritage for the Jalisco Ministry of Culture, said the program is meant to take the tradition beyond the Guadalajara area. Alejandra López Cuéllar, head of Community Culture, said each caravan visits two locations so people can hear live music in everyday public spaces. The September 9 concert on the Puerto Vallarta Malecón is the most visible local gathering.
