The Puerto Vallarta City Council has unanimously approved the designation of a green space, home to a memorial site for femicide victims and the Bicentennial Victory sculpture, as “El Parque de las Mujeres,” or “The Women’s Park.”
Spearheaded by Councilwoman Melissa Marlene Madero Plascencia, the initiative transforms the site into an official symbol of resilience and community commitment. The park’s designation aims to address the underrepresentation of women in public spaces, where only a fraction of areas are named after women, despite the ongoing issue of femicide.
The creation of “The Women’s Park” seeks to amplify the visibility of women’s memory and highlight the urgency of combating gender-based violence. The park will serve as a constant reminder of the women lost to violence and a call to action for the community.
In a show of solidarity, Puerto Vallarta will illuminate iconic landmarks in purple from March 7th to 9th, including the Malecón Arches, Municipal Presidency building, La Lija Cultural Center amphitheater, and the UMA.
