The taxis that are available at the airport are special ones, they are federal-licensed and are the only ones allowed to travel from the airport to hotels and areas in the vicinity, so they are more expensive than the regular ones you can find on the streets in town. The two companies are Aeromovil taxis and Transportes Terrestres that offer minivans.

The Airport taxi rates are especially high when you consider the rates you can get if you step out of the Federal Airport zone. You can get a cheaper rate, if it’s worth the hassle, by leaving the airport.
The easiest and shortest way is to move along the east side of the airport building towards the highway, you’ll find a pathway over the highway to find taxis and buses that go to Nuevo Vallarta and northwards, or you stay on the airport side for taxis and buses that travel to the Marina, Downtown, and the south zone.
Even so, be careful as taxis know the trick and push the prices up, why start off your trip to Vallarta with the hassle of lugging your bags and luggage and then end up paying 5 or 7 dollars less, it’s really not worth it. The only case I’d recommend it would be if you are traveling very light, say just your hand baggage, in that case, I’d take a bus where the rates are fixed.
